"Life is lived forward, but understood backward. It is not until we are down the road and we stand on the mountain looking back through the valley that we can appreciate the terrain God has allowed us to scale.” Jill Savage

My girlfriend is staying with me a few days and between her and my daughter and her girlfriend we have been watching "Chick Flicks'.

We watched a movie called Shall We Dance. I own it and I love the movie. I love dancing and no, I can't dance a lick either, but I liked it.

Gere was afraid to tell his wife he wasn't happy (with himself) - that (his) life wasn't enough for him - not with her and marriage per say - but within himself.

Dancing made him feel good and more complete (?) as a person. He made a choice to better his life. Why he didn't tell his wife he was taking dance lessons - I'm not sure. Why he didn't continue on with dance lessons in the end I didn't exactly understand either. Maybe once his wife found out about his dancing she became his dance partner . . .

One of the ideas I did see is that you have to be responsible for you own life. To look at yourself and your life. What can you do to your life to add quality to it?

Another theme of the movie was marriage. One sentence made me think. It was Susan Sarandon talking about why people get married. It didn't set right with me, although I liked the line.

Her character said "People marry because they need a witness to their life. It's a promise to care about one another. About everything. Good, bad, terrible, mundane, etc. All the time. Everyday. Marriage is a promise that your life will not go un-witnessed because the partner will be your witness."

Is that true - is that why people get married? What do you think? I don't know if I agree with that totally. Sounds good in theory, but not in practice. Truthfully I wonder why people get married sometimes. Why do people get married? What is the driving force?

And don't you think - if life needs to be recorded - we're a little responsible for that ourselves?

Is that the important thing in life? To have a witness that you existed? That doesn't 'feel' right to me.

What are you thoughts and opinions? I'm really interested.

I loved that movie too:) No, don't think that is a good reason for getting married and yes your life leaves and imprint on those it touches and that is you record of being here...at least that is my opinion:)
