Otis Redding

"Otis Ray Redding, Jr. (September 9, 1941 – December 10, 1967) was an American soul singer. Often called the "King of Soul", he is renowned for an ability to convey strong emotion through his voice. According to the website of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (where he was inducted in 1989), Redding's name is "synonymous with the term soul, music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm and blues into a form of funky, secular testifying." Redding died in a plane crash at the age of 26, one month before his biggest hit, "(Sittin On) The Dock of the Bay", was released. From Dawson, GA." Wikipedia

As many times as I have heard this I never knew he was killed in a plane crash. Did you? Why is that?

Last week my friend and I decided to go put our applications in at a new Embassy Suites opening here by our house. Why is it when people tell you that the times are hard out there and that jobs are hard to get - you hear it, but you don't quite think it applies to you. Maybe I'm a perpetual dreamer.

So we got all duded up and had our resumes in hand and went. It was not held at the Embassy Suites, it was held at the GA Dept. of Labor. We met at 8:30am. The applications were to be taken from 9 to 4. Since there was not one (!) parking place we decided to go to Cracker Barrel, for breakfast, and come back when the crowd thinned out and we could get a parking place.

We did that. Came back and got a parking place, but the line of people was around two sides of the building! Since we had each other we decided to stay and give it a whirl as long as I could leave by 2 to get my grandson.

At 1000 people the Ga Dept of Labor closed the line. We had made it in to the building! No one without a resume was admitted. We filled out another application that asked everything we had already put on the resume (????). Then we were taken to our first holding area of 30. After that holding area we were given numbers and asked to take a seat in the long hallway to go to another holding area. Then they took us by 6. Did that and then we were taken by 6 again to the last holding area where the interviews were. They had 4 interviewers and you interviewed right out in the middle of the room. Each time someone got done with their interview we moved over seat by seat - 30 times!

They asked what was the thing you liked least about your last job, are you available on weekends, all shifts, etc.

I felt like a sheep in many ways that day. It was truly humbling. Neither my friend or I have heard - it is supposed to be opening in October. You should have seen what some of the characters looked like to go to an interview. My mind is still boggled from that experience.

This whole thing shocked me - my innocence taken from me.

Well, after that cheery story and mind you it is hump day - lets have some humor.

So in speaking about sheep here is sheep herding in it's extreme form. You gotta look.

Your day is the perfect example of what kind of state America is in!
We want to work, but so does everyone else! The competition is so stiff out there. Unless, you're out there trying for a job, you really can't understand just how desperate we're all getting to gain employment! It's crazy, it's heartbreaking, and it's just stupid that things have gotten this bad!
What's a mid to late 50's gal to do when competing with 20 somethings with degrees? We've got experience, and a fine work ethic, but they've got pep, are cute, and a paper that says they are more employable than we old gals!
Grrrr....makes me want to bite the head off a nail!!
