"Life is lived forward, but understood backward. It is not until we are down the road and we stand on the mountain looking back through the valley that we can appreciate the terrain God has allowed us to scale.” Jill Savage

Jonas Salk

Happy Birthday to Jonas Salk - inventor of the polio vaccine. And speaking of love this week - what about the love of a mother (an a father).

Jonas's mother was also (so was his father - couldn't finish high school in Russia and immigrated to the US)mostly uneducated and likewise had emigrated to the U.S. where she would use her time raising their three sons. According to Jonas, "She wanted to be sure that we all were going to advance in the world. Therefore we were encouraged in our studies and overly protected." She was best remembered for "pushing her three sons relentlessly to excel," writes Oshinsky.

He became a physician. His brother Herman became a veterinarian and Lee became a clinical psychologist.

“Appreciation can make a day, even change a life. Your willingness to put it into words is all that is necessary.” —Margaret Cousins

I like that quote - do you think in loving or liking someone there has to be an appreciation?

“Our Similarities bring us to a common ground; Our Differences allow us to be fascinated by each other.” —Tom Robbins And what about differences and similarities where love and like are concerned?

Wow...so many interesting tidbits today, and a good funny! Such humble beginnings for such a great man, who knew? (Salk)
I agree with that quote about needing similarities, but the differences are what adds the spark.

Differences and sparks are good things - but not polar differences.
