Thanksgiving - what are your eating goals?

Making Smart Choices on Thanksgiving -
"This coming Thursday is Thanksgiving, one of the most important eating days of the year. So here are a few choices to consider in your pursuit of a happy Thanksgiving.

Turkey: White Meat vs. Dark Meat
Turkey is the centerpiece of this holiday meal, and the dark meat has about 15 percent more calories than the white meat. A 3.5-ounce serving of turkey breast with skin has about 153 calories; dark meat with skin has about 182 calories.

Traditional Turkey Gravy vs. Cranberry Sauce
I thought for sure that cranberry sauce would be the winner, but gravy is the right choice. Per half-cup, cranberry sauce has 180 calories compared to only 80 calories for traditional turkey gravy.

Pumpkin Pie vs. Apple Pie vs. Pecan Pie
The pumpkin pie is actually the best of the three, coming in at 270 calories per slice, but the apple pie is a close second at about 350. Pecan pie, however, is a dietary disaster at more than 700 calories. Whichever one you choose, definitely skip the whipped cream — it adds an extra 80 to 100 calories per serving. Oh, and if you add a scoop of vanilla Haagen-Dazs ice cream to make it "a la mode," tack on another 270 calories.

Candied Sweet Potatoes vs. Mashed Potatoes
I was hoping that the candied sweet potatoes would somehow turn out to be less fattening, but no luck. A cup of mashed potatoes has about 240 to 300 calories, depending on how much butter and what type of milk or cream you use. "

Okay - this is interesting, but are we really going to do this on Thanksgiving?

I mean I might want to eat like this, but realistically I don't think I will. Now this is just for me personally - I believe moderation is the key instead of denying yourself. I'm no diet expert, but I do think it's a good idea to eat a little bit of what you want. If you have to skip something - skip the Haagen-Dazs.

What are your eating 'goals' for this Thanksgiving?

I ESPECIALLY liked this post, Chatty - so GOOD to read right before Thanksgiving! And, funny thing - I was talking with one of my boys on the phone last night about raising some chickens for meat - now I see its better for your health (eating) to raise the kind with more white (breast) meat than the kind with mostly dark meat. Of course I kinda knew that, but getting calorie/fat content in print, in front of my spectacled eyes - can't miss the truth!

Of course dark meat is more fattening than white...it's because I like it. Just like my champagne taste on my beer budget!
Well, I'm cooking a 25 pound bird with two kinds of potatoes, my kids favorite chafing dish meatballs, homemade bread (thanks to my bread maker because I am yeast challenged), our family poppy seed cake and the rest is being supplied by the others. Gee, sounds like the "Others" from Lost!
Happy Thanksgiving, Sandy!

It's a good thing you added that last part about eating it all anyway (even if in moderation). Otherwise I would have thought you weren't human! The day only comes once a year after all. Have a good one.

my gosh with the pecan pie! I'm so thankful that is not my favorite pie :)

good tips to take into consideration for the holiday; I plan to eat a little bit of everything in moderation and be realistic if I put on a pound (Or two or three) over the holidays

Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm going to focus on moderation and skip the "recreational eating." For me that's when we're sitting around the dining room table with all the desserts in front of us drinking coffee and laughing. I need to laugh more and reach less for another little sliver of pie, especially the pecan pie. I have been warned.

Well, it's nice to know what others will be doing as they eat their Thanskgiving dinner. We all are different, yet we are all the same. I have met so many wonderful blog friends. That is something I am very thankful for!
