Senior Green Belt vs ADHD

“Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.”
—John R. Wooden
You can tell here this particular day he wasn't focused. A lot of times he can rein himself in and focus, but today he did not or could not. It is such a frustration to be honest - that some days he is on and some days he is off focus. And it looks at times to be on purpose. And yet there is nothing we can do to make him stay focused. I believe in my heart it is not always a choice.

He's just somewhere else this day - not sure where.

Always loves the camera - but again he is not paying attention to the class!

BLACK BELT June 2011

Hopefully this will be the path of my grandson. He just recieved his blue senior belt on Saturday. Things are getting much harder now and I - and I have to be honest here - I don't know if his mind is on the black belt as mine and his mother's are.

We want him to reach the goal. Now his dad, the ex, told him Choi Kwang Do is not much of a sport and wants him to do soccer. Why I don't know because he never played soccer himself. And why would he tell his son that and discourage him? I am so mad.

Ever since the grandson heard that - it's been harder and harder to get him to practice. He wants to please his dad, more then he wants the black belt. Of course it ultimately is his choice.

Maybe . . . hopefully I misreading the situation.

There you go buddy - stay focused on the goal!

Seeing these photos today really brings home what you deal with on an ongoing basis! At first glance it seems he is stretching and getting ready for class, but looking at the other kids, we see his mind is elsewhere. What he is learning here will be much more helpful than soccer and hurtful sports. I wonder how he would react to a bunch of football players chasing him and knocking him down? That might be terrifying - more so than the dentist!

I hope he stays with this...it is much more then a sport it is a discipline and very helpful to him. I know you will support him no matter what Sandie!!

The ex doesn't understand that the discipline of the classes he takes are so beneficial to what ails him.
Duh...ex's have no brain matter...just a big mouth!
Halfway to a major goal is quite an accomplishment. Luckily, he has a wonderful support system. You should pat yourself on the back!

I like what Linda said, that it is a discipline, I tend to agree with her. I think it is good to have kids with ADHD to get involved in sports, activities, disciplines, whatever. I do think it helps them as long as it isn't too frustrating for all involved. I wonder if swimming would be good for him??

you are a wonderful supportive grandmother Sandie

It is so frustrating some time, but we have to remember that is part of ADHD, not always being able to stay focused.
Marissa loves Tumbling, but there are days she concentrates too hard. She tries too hard, and just finally shuts down.
And we know it is time for her to rest and start over the next day.
I don't know why the EX would suggest Soccer if he never played it, but I will tell you it does take an enormous amount of focus to play it. A lot of people think it is just get out there and run and kick a ball, but to really play and be good, you have to focus on the ball, on the job at hand and on the goal. My Keiferman played and he would focus so much, he didn't hear the people on the side line screaming and yelling...I'd say did you hear me hollering at you, and he'd say NO, I was too focused to hear anything but myself thinking about my next move. Sports like baseball and soccer takes an extreme amount of focus. Keifer took Choi Kwang Do when he was younger, but loved the challenge of soccer more.
I hope if he loves Kang Do, he will stick to it and reach his goal, if that is his choice.
Sorry I haven't been around much lately, been on the go and taking care of DH. He's having those bad headaches again.

Oh, Sandie. He's such a good kid. He's his own person. Who cares if he beat to a different drum? The ex sounds like a loo loo. Brother. Can't stand it when people discourage kids who are trying. Take care. Good pictures! Sincerely, Susan

Hey Sandie!

At first I thought the Senior belt was for Seniors! lol That maybe the Seniors go through a different process to get their belt! I had a blonde moment and I don't have blonde hair! lol

And who wants their kid to play soccer? Not me! For lots of reasons.

Hugs,
Angela

If he loves it I hope he will be supported in his interests. Kids sure need positive hobbies and sports to be involved with these days. Also your serenity prayer on your sidebar is special to me too. Glad we're "followers" here:) XXMollye

Oh let's hope that your Grandson didn't take the comment to heart. Stay the course!!! Attain the highest belt you can.

I remember you asked me about my son's learning disabilities. He had great difficulty reading and comprehending, however, any lecture courses or film versions of subject matter he was studying stuck like glue. Luckily, those concessions had to be made for him during his school years.

He also has horrible spelling. The games I had to come up with to teach him his spelling words were really funny! But in the end, he could spell mysterious but get went wrong every time!
