A gift to you . . .

Happy Birthday and this is quite fitting - Guess whose birthday it is today? It was because of her I'm doing birthdays on my blog. I saw the movie the Julie and Julia last year and decided to do something kind of like that. I came up with birthdays. So the end of this August it will be the one year mark for me. I tell you it was a lot of work - not like cooking from her book - which I admire Julie immensely - but it was hard work non the less and I hope you've enjoyed it. I tried to do some empowering women, some oldies, but goodies, famous, and even some Saints. Which it is Mother Teresa's birthday this month! I'll be finished the end of August.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JULIA CHILD - wikipedia

After the death of her beloved friend Simone Beck, Child relinquished Le Peetch after a month long stay in June 1992 with her niece, Phila, and her family. She turned the keys over to Jean Fischbacher's sister, just as she and Paul had promised nearly 30 years earlier. Paul, who was ten years older, died in 1994 after living in a nursing home for five years following a series of strokes in 1989.

In 2001 she moved to a retirement community in Santa Barbara, California, donating her house and office to Smith College, which later sold the house. She donated her kitchen, which her husband designed with high counters to accommodate her formidable height, and which served as the set for three of her television series, to the National Museum of American History, where it is now on display. Her iconic copper pots and pans were on display at COPIA in Napa, California, until August 2009 when they were reunited with her kitchen at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, DC.

She received the French Legion of Honor in 2000 and the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003. Child also received honorary doctorates from Harvard University, Johnson & Wales University in 1995, her alma mater Smith College, Brown University in 2000, and several other universities.

On August 13, 2004, Julia Child died of kidney failure at her assisted-living home in Montecito, two days before her 92nd birthday. Child ended her last book My Life in France with "... thinking back on it now reminds that the pleasures of the table, and of life, are infinite - toujours bon appétit!"

Happy Birthday Linda Ellerbee - Daily Celebrations

""We will not last and we know we will not---and we still write, carve, build, paint and plant to last. We are, it seems to me, very, very brave." ~ Linda Ellerbee

Very, very brave...

Broadcast journalist Linda Ellerbee from Bryan Texas, celebrates her birthday today. Known for her concise writing style, wry wit, and direct manner, she has helped turn network news into something more than, in her words, "the gospel according to cute."

She has written honestly about her stay at The Betty Ford Clinic for alcohol dependency. Seven years ago Ellerbee discovered lumps on both breasts and began her cancer battle. In a bold, brave move, she chose to have a bilateral mastectomy, not lumpectomy, because she didn't want to worry about recurrence of the disease."

My grandson was visiting this week and came across an old show of Julia Child. He was fascinated with her and I enjoyed telling what I knew. I always start her story with the fact that she was in the OSS during WWII. That is still not a big deal to many but it is to me. How could such a large woman ever do secret spy undercover work?

Thanks for the video! I did not know that about Andrea and it is inspiration to those in the same situation. I love Julia and Linda also. Both great in their fields and I certainly miss Julia! Happy Birthday to them! Empowering women for sure and you are too with your past year and this great post!

Did you ever get to read My Life in France? It was so wonderful and one of the best books that I read last year. So many things were surprising about her, especially her shoe size! Did you know that her brother was/is here in Atlanta? One of my friends had one of his classes. Very interesting indeed.

We have all enjoyed the birthday project!! Thank you Sandi!

I think Julia Child is/was one of a kind, a true artist and chef like no other. She got the job done and knew the best way to do it. I was so impressed when I watched one of her cooking shows where she deboned an entire turkey and then stuffed it with the dressing. She rolled it up and baked it and when it was done, you could just slice it and you had the dressing right inside. I have been wanting to make that recipe, only I'd have to ask a butcher to help me with that deboning of the bird. I don't think I could do that like she did. She knew her anatomy!

Dear Sandie...OMG! That was the most awesome, inspiring post yet. I had no idea that was Andrea's story....I watched the video with tears streaming down my face. What a man! What a woman his mother was! What a story, Sandie.

Loved the birthday write-ups today and all through the year as well. You have done a wonderful job.

Can't wait to see what you have in store for the next year! Susan

I can't see the video, as we have things like that blocked on our computer. But I CAN read your words.

I think it's neat that you've been doing the birthdays for a year. It's a neat idea that makes your blog totally unique.

I have not seen Julie and Julia (you know me, I'm mostly old movies). My daughter has seen it, though, and it was the inspiration for her to start a cooking blog. She has been blogging on a personal blog since 2006, but she decided to add her love of writing to her love of cooking with a food blog. So she records all her culinary experiments on the blog.

Really, Julia Child is such a pioneer. Cooking is now en vogue, I guess is the saying, thanks to The Food Network. Before cable, though, there was Julia cooking up a storm. I think of Barbara Mandrell's song "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool." Well Julia Child loved to cook when cooking wasn't cool. She's a real inspiration to do what you love...even if no one else is doing it.

Have a lovely day,
Patti

Sandie...yet ANOTHER thing in common. I too love Andrea Bocelli. I did not know that about his Mother. what a loss that would have been, huh? Would you please email me the link to his little story. Good thing it had the subtitles, because I could barely hear him. I have my volume full blast. I have enjoyed your birthdays immensely.
