Piedmont Park and the Dekalb Farmer's Market . . .

I am joining Susan A Southern Day Dreamer for the first time today. Please check her blog out and her rules for joining!

Piedmont Park - The Tavern Restaurant and The Dekalb Farmer's Marker in Atlanta

Piedmont Park in the spring time.

Okay, I admit it - I took a blog vacation this weekend. I just spent time with my family doing some different kind of things for a change. Above and below is Piedmont Park - it was busy and almost every one had a dog - which was fine -because they all picked up after their pets. A very yuppie and upscale area. You can see the city of Atlanta, GA from there.

I was born in Chicago - raised somewhat in Atlanta - my twenties back in Chicago - and we moved back here in 1986.

When I lived here the first time - I went to elementary school and high school here. Elementary school went through until the 7th grade and 8th grade was high school and I was a sub-freshmen!

When was in high school - I used to go with my friend there a lot - kind of a teenage hang out. Then though the years it turned into a dangerous area. Now it's a yuppie area - complete with a restaurant called The Tavern - which we went to for lunch. Can you believe I didn't bring my camera? These are not my pictures, but this is what I saw.

Out to the right they have a huge tent - where people have their $$$ weddings. It would be a beautiful wedding.

After that we went to the Dekalb Farmer's Market - actually it's an international farmers market - they have flags hanging from every country and the workers there are from other countries too!

Now you would think being a child there - they would be bored - not so my grandson. He LOVED it. The fish department was HUGE. They had every fish imaginable - squid and octopus (whole) - large fish - small fish - fresh live crabs and lobsters that he was fascinated with.

Of course he liked the live fish best - but did enjoy seeing these.

They had a HUGE bread department - my downfall. My GS and I tasted A LOT of samples!Came home with a few loafs too. The bakery was like to die for! Whew - GS and I over did it there too. No wonder I have a hard time on my diet! Note to self - don't go to places like this!

The hubby goes for olives and cheese and wine.

Daughter felt it was too crowded, (it was packed), but still managed to find a couple of things.

Oh yeah there were lots of fresh fruit and veggies too!

This is about an hour away from us. At Piedmont Park my daughter saw someone she worked with and at the farmer's marker I saw a blog friends daughter that I had only seen in pictures, but I recognized her. Is this a small world or what? It's a small world after all!

So tell me what did you do this first weekend of spring? I'd love to know.

Love,
Chatty

Oh Sandie, your weekend sounded great. Ohhhh, I LOVE farmers markets but we are not even close to having any open here just yet. Sometimes I feel like New England is an arctic tundra! ha!

This past weekend started with a delicious fish fry at a sister's house. Had a big breakfast here on Sunday with guests and an excursion an hour away to a supermarket sized thrift store. Fun!

Hope you have a fun Monday! Susan

Oh my gosh – you were so close! I would have loved to meet you!

When ever you want to come my way –we’ll do it.

How wonderful you did that walk for cancer. It is a great gift to women.

Thanks for telling me!

Susan - you had a 'fish' fry - kind of the same with the 'fish' - teehee.

How nice you are able to spend time with your sisters.

Glad you had fun at the thrift shop - I know you and I bet you found some nice things.

Thanks for sharing.

That market looks like heaven. I love places like that. And I have no self control when it comes to breads and treats.
This weekend we had a lot of family around so didn't get much accomplished.

Hi Chatty. Love the lovely springlike feel to your Blog, and that quote at the header is brilliant. I might just borrow that some time if I may. Sounds as if you had a super weekend. Lovely to spend time with the family. I love going to places like that market, and I'm a sucker for bread as well!! Fortunately, it was a gorgeous day here yesterday, and pretty warm too, so I spend the day in the garden, generally tidying up, and did manage to eat my lunch outside as well, which was great!

I love Piedmont Park but haven't been in a long time. I know that was Ash at the market! She bought stuff for our brunch yesterday when she shopped Sat. She loves that place. The breads are amazing. She always buys the pecan bread, I ate almost 1/2 a loaf once. She biked there and back home also. hugs, Linda

The only place I've ever seen in Atlanta is the airport! It's one of the places on my wish list--someday! It's great to have a wish list--mine just keeps getting longer!

I wondered where you were, I am HAPPY to know you were having FUN! Well I am in St. Louis, we have had some nice days. Saturday it was burr cold so I hung out with two friends, had lunch got a pedicure and did some mall shopping together, FUN. Sunday was beautiful and warm so I walked outside for 4 miles on the walking trails in Bellefontaine Park, then came home picked up Riley (dog) and went back to the park and walked another mile. HAPPY SPRING SANDIE!!!! Love, Carol

I love the DeKalb Farmer's Market! It's where my older girl learned to count - with brussels sprouts. She loved to go look at the live fish, too, but she was afraid of the flags and I'd have to hold her or put her in the cart for just a little while.

My younger girl finds it too big, often too crowded (like, on the weekends), and noisy. There is that constant hum, that is true. It makes her nervous; just too much sensory stimulation for her.

... and it is entirely too easy to go overboard there. My favorite is the fresh-squeezed citrus juices. mmmmm.

I still will hold my recyclables for our next trip there. It's too far now for us to go to regularly.

Love Piedmont Park, too, and really, all of the ATL. I hope we can meet some day, too.

I really, really love it when an area is revived like that! It looks gorgeous with the Atlanta skyline in the background.

PS. I'm from Michigan so any mention of Chicago makes my heart pitter pat!

I've probably been to Piedmont Park with the husband. I don't remember places very well.

I definitely remember that Farmer's Market, though. It used to be like a field trip for me every time we went to Atlanta. I could find the kind of stuff I can NEVER find around here.

Nowadays, the husband just brings it home for me from the road so I haven't been in years.

What a wonderful blog vacation!

Soooo glad to learn you and the family had an enjoyable "stay-cation"!
I'd have enjoyed tagging along at the farmers market -- in fact, I'd probably be shadowing your hubby ... cheese and wine, yes!!!

Hi Sandie! Sounds like a lovely 'family' outing weekend! I haven't been to Atlanta yet, but I have relatives and high-school class mates that live there now. So I plan to visit sometime! :-)

I spend the weekend with my youngest and oldest son. One had a birthday we celebrated and the other was packing, getting ready for a month long trip soon. I'm just enjoying the few weekends left before they each start their adult lives. I'm going to miss each one, just like I already miss my middle son terribly. However I'm happy, if they are happy! :-)

Have a wonderful week, Sandie!!
Hugs,
Coreen xoxo

That market looks like an awesome place to shop. I live in rural Illinois and we don''t have anything like that nearby. It would be nice to have weekend excursion like yours.

Such a cool place Sandie! We don't have anything like that here at all. I would love to go to a place like that where there is variety!

Have a Great Week!

Sounds like you had a lovely weekend. This first weekend of spring, still deep in ice and snow, we packed up house and moved to a new one. Big time busyness.

How fun, Sandie!!

I was in Arizona with "The Hub" - we went to a western festival. There were lots of stars from old TV and movie westerns - Clint Walker, Peter Brown, John Saxon - to name a few.

We visited and shopped. We had a great time.

Drove home yesterday in the pouring rain.

And then, ended my Monday by doing one of my favorite things - visiting with Chatty!

Hey Chatty! I've been to Piedmont Park before! You know I have relatives in the Atlanta area. I've seen a few really neat "touristy" places. My favorite was seeing Margaret Mitchell's apartment she lived in when writing Gone With the Wind! I promise I WILL get there sometime this summer and we'll have to get together. It's amazing how many Atlanta blog friends I have!

I think it was great to take a blog break, Sandie!! we all need them and good for you for taking one this weekend and doing something fun. Piedmont Park looks neat and that market sounds divine. I can imagine why GS would enjoy it so much; and the samples sound great too!!

it rained here so we didn't do much; did walk around one of the indoor malls here Sunday afternoon and people watched :)

I spent the weekend recovering from herding eight grandchildren and three adult children the week before so mine wasn't quite as spectacular as yours but it was certainly restful.

Oh, the park is beautiful, Sandie! And, I love that it has come back to life! I would have loved to have spent the day there with y'all.

I'm running around like a chicken with my head cut off getting down to the wire on our local historic home tour. It'll all be over by Sunday evening! whew!

Have a great day! Blessings ~ Tanna

The farmers' market looks delightful. I recovered from a stomach virus, gained enough strength to go for a walk in the park around a lake, and enjoy the beauty of the earth reawakening in 80 degree temps. It was joyful.

My kids tease us and say if we are not at Costco then we are at the DeKalb Farmers Market on a weekend morning. It is the largest indoor fish market on the east coast. We go 2xs a month because the veggies and fruit are so fresh. Agree the bread is amazing. It is always crowded but weekends are more so. I am surprised they allowed you to take photos since there are signs all over saying No Photos and if they see you they come right over and tell you bye bye:-) Glad you had fun.
