Remember the joy you felt when you discovered a dandelion as a child?

You closed your eyes and make a wish, and when you blew, your breathe carried the seeds of the dandelion into the world.

We need to remember the joy we felt back then. I caught myself the other day - my grandson was picking and blowing dandelions the other day and blowing them in the yard.

Do you know what I did?

I actually told him to stop! The first thing I thought of was that is was a weed and we don't need anymore weeds in the yard. Then I have to get the Mister out and put more fertilizer out and so forth.

When did I get so old and cranky?

Next time he does it (and he will) I am going to surprised him and blow one myself.

I'm not sure when it happens, but at some point we become adults and it's easy to become jaded. When did walking through puddles become less fascinating? Sometimes we just really need to make the effort to see the world anew again, through our childrens/grandchildrens eyes.

That's one of the things I miss the most about having little ones...the wonder of it all. Little children are fascinated by the little things. They get excited about things that we don't even give a second glance to. I think we need to take a lesson from them. So, definitely, blow the dandelion seeds with him!! I'll be doing it too.

Have a great day.

Love,
Patti

We all have those "moments" but you caught yourself. Next time, you will let your heart be free and embrace your inner child. And you will smile.

that is when you should have dragged out the frame and reframed your comment and said go ahead, blow them. i blew a many of them when a child and if i saw one i would blow it now. have not seen one in many years.

Oh Sandie......Go out today with GS and blow those dandies to the heavens and back! Susan

I always liked dandelions as a child. I've had moments similar to yours and usually my son will remind me to think back to when I was younger. I really like this post. Love how you keep us thinking in a good way. :) Marie

Sometimes we are required to be the adult, other times it is okay to let our inner child take over. Go out and have a good blow with your grandson.

Shame on you Chatty, for telling him to stop!!! It's true though, isn't it, this sort of behavious sort of creeps up on us. That, to me, is the beauty of having young grandchildren, to be able to walk on the beach with them and see the wonder in their eyes, to collect conkers, to jump in the autumn puddles and, yes, to blow away at those dandelions!! Funny post my friend.

I loved dandelions as a child and blowing them was great fun
but now I can't stand them
and like you think that if I blow I will get a zillion weeds growing!

Maybe there comes a stage when we all become a little cross
but most days we are not!

Happy dandelion blowing.

Amen, Sandie. If we could all just close our wish, wish, and blow like a child, I think our world would be a much better place.

Weedier, yes, but better.

I wish we could all see through the eyes of a child more often.

I think Grandchildren are God's gift to grandparents to remember what's important. He showed you didn't he? You might have gotten the lesson a little late, but you did get it. And, you reminded the rest of us to listen to the kiddlings.

Glad you'll join him the next time! Just aim towards the neighbor you like the least! (joking:@)

I recently cross stitched a chart called Dandy Dreams, with the verse "Take a breath, gently blow. Spread your dreams and let them grow." I look forward to hearing that you've joined your grandson in doing so!

My father use to say the same thing to me! He would tell me that by blowing them I was causing the seeds to spread and we would have more weeds in the grass! But I agree, it was so much fun blowing them when I was a kid. Where we live now we get so many dandelions, everyone's grass is a sea of yellow for the month of June. Our neighbor tried to re-seed his grass and spread all this weed killer in order to get rid of his share of dandelions. It worked for the first year, but now his lawn is yellow as well. I say, there's more for the kids to pick for me!

This does not sound like YOU! We need to help them pick and blow along with them!!!

I was always blowing these as a child, to my Dad's dread lol. And also created necklaces with the bottoms, getting all black at my fingers from the white stuff inside. I think it's important to keep the child inside alive :-)

Lisa @ Two Bears Farm said...

My parents would never let me blow them. But now I blow them all the time w/ the boys. We just make sure we don't tell Daddy ;-)

Through the eyes of our children and/or grandchildren we learned to appreciate the simple pleasures in life. Next time I see one, I will think of you! Ann

That is so funny because it's true. It happens to all of us.

It's nice you caught yourself! I do this sometimes too. I loved dandelions as a child and actually, they are very pretty when they are yellow and when they are puff-balls.

It' sure hard to hang onto the child in us. Seems life gets in the way.

Awww.. Good for you! Life's too short to take it too seriously. Having fun with your grandson vs. worrying about the weeds?? It's not a tough choice at all!... I have to admit, though, sometimes I catch myself stressing over the little stuff, and now I even catch my son doing it too! Oh my word, that's NOT what I want to teach him! So yes, blow dandelions, blow bubbles.. play in the rain, start a good food fight (well, maybe in the kitchen.. NOT the dining room! You HAVE to set SOME limits!).. Great post, Chatty!!! Thanks! ~tina

You are too cute! I'd have done the same thing ... I suppose Mother wasn't thrilled with us either. Chuckle! TY for resurrecting those wonderful moments of 'spreading the seed' ... long forgotten.

Love ya!

THat made me laugh... isn't it funny what we say and do before we think! Oh us humans...but the wonderful thing is when we recognize and admit we were out of place:)

Betty said...

Yes, you've got to play once in a while! I rarely see dandelions here. I don't know why. We've never had one in our yard, but we had them all the time growing up in NJ. I don't see lightening bugs here either. Someone told me once it's because so many people use bug killer. Sad. They were always fun to catch in a jar on a summer evening.

Good for you, blowing a dandelion is good for the soul :)

I think we've all done this. It's so hard to think like a kid when you're an adult...so sad really.

I am guilty of doing that, telling my granddaughter not to do something..She loves to run through our garden, and Ray gets upset. Then my daughter told us, "Shiarn thinks she is Alice in Wonderland." Could I destroy that?? No, I just love on her. xxxx

I like your ballon/smiley face signature, Sandie! Too cute! Its been years since I've blown a dandelion; did it a lot when the kids were little. I know they are weeds, but they are cute ones (unless you are trying to get rid of them, LOL). You go girl, blow the dandelion and jump in the next rain puddle!

I do the same thing! Those things can overtake your yard if you aren't careful! I think the growing season is over for them here though. I do remember playing with them as a kid. I don't think I got yelled at for it either but then again I don't think mom had to watch my every move like we have to in today's world....

Look forward to next time. Don't dwell on this teenie slip. We all sometimes get so involved in the daily grind we miss something.
Thanks for the gentle reminder that we need to stop and smell the roses or "blow the dandilion seeds". Love, Ginger

I would be happy with a yard full of dandelions. They are lovely little flowers and they have many uses besides making dandelion wine. Read up on their advantages and you and your grandson have a wishing contest. You know that if you make a wish and blow all the fuzz off the dandelion in one breath your wish will come true don't you?

It's amazing how children can help us remember the simple joys in life! Beautiful! Hope you get a chance to blow a few dandelion seeds around with him.

Don't you hate how we get so *practical* when we become adults?? Sometimes I think I've turned into a grumpy old woman.

I've got to remember this - I may grow older, but I'll never grow up! The childlike part of us is the part that Jesus loved. May we never lose sight of that inner child...the one that loves Jesus AND His dandelions!

GOD BLESS!
