World Animal Day

Wikipedia:

"World Animal Day is celebrated each year on October 4. It started in Florence, Italy in 1931 at a convention of ecologists. On this day, animal life in all its forms is celebrated, and special events are planned on locations all over the globe. 4 October was originally chosen for World Animal Day because it is the feast day of Francis of Assisi, a nature lover and patron saint of animals and the environment. Numerous churches throughout the world observe the Sunday closest to 4 October with a Blessing for the Animals.

However, World Animal Day has now gone beyond being the celebration of a Christian saint and is today observed by animal-lovers of all beliefs, nationalities and backgrounds. Animal blessings are held in churches, synagogues, and by independent Animal Chaplains in parks and fields. Animal rescue shelters hold fundraising events and open days, wildlife groups organize information displays, schools undertake animal-related project work and individuals and groups of friends or co-workers donate to animal charities or pledge to sponsor a shelter animal."

Now I have one little 15 pound mutt named Disco - he was a rescue dog. They found him outside. He must have been abused. At first he was doing submissive peeing - he has stopped that now. But sadly doesn't know how to play. He is very serious. Very loving. He is my grandson's best friend. My husband's exercise companion. My daughter's second child. Teehee

We even had a play date for him

The adventure of life is to learn. The goal of life is to grow. The nature of life is to change. The challenge of life is to overcome. The essence of life is to care. The secret of life is to dare. The beauty of life is to give. The joy of life is to love!”

I didn't know there was a World Animal Day but I knew there were special days that some churches say special prayers for them. There was a church nearby on Saturday that held a special service in the park and prayed over the pets that people brought to the park. No pets for us, hubby is allergic, and secretively I'm happy! Hope your day is good!

Years ago, two cats, Sarah and Abraham, had a special place in my home. They brought much companionship and delight.

Disco is so lucky to have you.

My Max is a recuse dog too. I'm sure he was abused in his prior "home." He's a good little guy.

I'm head over heels in love with my cat. He's the best!

It is "animal day" around here everyday as our dog, Dodger, seems to rule the roost. He is also a rescue dog who came to the pound as a stray. He will have been with us for two years soon and has brought us much joy.

I didn't know it was World Animal Day. Thanks for the heads up, Sandie. I've had numerous pets I've loved over the years. Our kitty, Stormy, was rescued by my hubby and has lived with us now 2 years. Wonderful post!

It is always amusing to see horses attend services at a nearby church for their annual blessing which took place this past weekend. They are from the hunt club and virtually never seen on the streets of suburbia.

I like the new look here and really enjoy the witchy cartoon.

Yayyy for World Animal Day! You know I love all animals! We now have three doggies and two of them are rescues. They think it's WAD everyday, they're loved so much. So many other doggies never feel that kind of love...so sad.
Your Disco is lucky to have such a caring mommy and grandson to have such a caring grandma!

Hi Sandie,
I never knew there was a world animal day...I'm so short on time I'll have to save my tribute to my pets for another day, but as they don't have a calendar I think they won't mind! Great posting, great quotes!

Okay, here is my tribute to my pets (all gone now):

To all the pets I have loved and lost, you brought me more joy and laughter and love than I can ever put into words. I hope you are running down Heaven's streets of gold having the time of your lives. I know you are, so that makes me happy.

I had no idea that there was such a thing as Animal Day - however, I LOVE the idea.

Our animal friends deserve recognition for all the joy they bring to our lives. They are companions and cohorts, friends and furry comfort.

Today I will pay tribute to Bo, the dachshund that I grew up with, who spent many years being my best friend.

And of course, I'll give a very big *shout-out* to Marty, my dearest granddog. That beagle is so very dear to my heart. He makes me laugh, he makes me peaceful, he brings me comfort, he touches me deeply - he makes me honored to be loved by him, and so happy to love him back. He has taught me many things about the character of God - and about the purity of a loving relationship. Yup, Marty is my very special boy...

Happy Day to Disco! He's a buddy worth celebrating!

GOD BLESS - all of us - furry or feathered or scaled or winged. All of us created by the Creator...

Lilly is a rescue dog and seems to be a lot like Disco. For a long time, she would run when I got the broom out to sweep the kitchen floor. She's better about that now. She was very serious when we got her too, but she is learning how to play. So sad to think what some animals go through. People can be so cruel.
Cute picture. Hope you're doing well. :)

Nice post - I didn't know it was world animal day today :) I love the pic of your GS with the dogs - very nice.
I use to have pets back home in Sweden, cats & dogs. I had a dog that was my running companion:) She dragged me around at times lol.

Enjoy your Day my friend!

I just finished recording the story of St. Francis, this is the anniversary of his death, so it is the Feast Of St. Francis Day. Did you get Disco blessed? Maybe a blessing for happiness...that is so sad, it just doesn't seem right. Dogs are always happy!

I didn't know about World Animal Day, but it couldn't be more fitting given what I will be doing tomorrow with a friend.

Her 19 year old Chihuahua is failing and she cannot face giving him the peace he deserves by herself. We go to the vet in the morning and I hope to spend the rest of the day reminding her what a part of our family he was over the years. My son (now married and would never admit this probably) used to sleep with this tiny tyrant when we babysat him and then begged for a little dog from Santa. My grown up daughter has known him practically all her life. My black cat Susie (RIP April) and Nicky (the Chihuahua) would have epic battles over who was boss when he would visit. All talk no action, but that talk was nasty!! Thanks for the chance to talk about little Nicky, with the huge personality! Ann

Good Morning, Sandie!!
What a lovely celebration and tribute to our dear animals worldwide you've posted this day!
I am glad they made a special day for animals. I am an animal lover and advocate. I live with 3 cats now, but I used to have 10. I used to be a cat breeder as well. I had a Cattery long ago. My daughter has 2 dogs, and I love them too. I used to ride horses when I was a young girl. I miss that!! I wish to live in a farm with lots of animals around me. Animals are my best friends, for they give so much of themselves, unconditional love, etc., and they ask little in return, our love and care for them.
Your dog, Disco is so cute. Your gorgeous grandson must spoil him as well. Lovely family, you got!!
Thank you for sharing this story with the world, Sandie!!
Thank you for bringing back the open window comments format!! It's the only way that I could post my comments in other people's blogs.
God bless you, my friend Sandie, and all your beloved ones!!
Thank you for posting heartfelt comments in my blogs!!
Love is the most important thing that makes the world go round...
Much Love in Christ,
Poet Starry Dawn.

Ahh St Francis loved the animals, and who can't? On telly last night we saw a church that had everyone bring in their pets to be blessed. It was amazing. I love my Monty and Mille, she lie a typicl girl runs circles around him. he is a little gentleman and gives into her. They are a comedy act to watch. Much love Crystal xx

You'd think I'd know it was World Animal Day with all the animals I have around here, but I didn't. I did know some churches were blessing animals this past Sunday, but I just didn't make the connection.

They're a lot of work, but I sure love having them!

Thanks for the info. I did not know that it is Animal Day today. I love animals.
I have not written for a while. I had a strange sensation in my head. Worries about getting forget full have been haunting me. I have overcome them but still I am reading a lot about different medications I take so I understand what is going on with my head. Hope every thing is fine with you:)

thanks for educating us about Wold Animal Day, Sandie; I didn't know there was such a day! But we did drive by a church the other day and they had a sign when they were going to bless animals (I think it was this past Sunday). Now I know where the custom came from.

Loved the witch's message as she has splattered against the pillar!

I think Disco is a great mix for your family; who knows, maybe he will learn how to play sometime!!
