Saturday - Some Public Service Information

Photobucket

Yes this is long - skip it if you want - or if you get one piece of information then great.

Thank you Linda B.

Great info... Particularly the bottom part about the wasp spray and car keys! I put that in different colors...

THIRTEEN THINGS YOUR BURGLAR WON'T TELL YOU:

1. Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator.

2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier.

3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste... and taste means there are nice things inside. Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have.

4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it..

5. If it snows while you're out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway.

6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don't let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it's set. That makes it too easy.

7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink. And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom - and your jewelry. It's not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.

8. It's raining, you're fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door - understandable. But understand this: I don't take a day off because of bad weather.

9. I always knock first. If you answer, I'll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don't take me up on it.)

10. Do you really think I won't look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.

11. Here's a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms.

12. You're right: I won't have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it's not bolted down, I'll take it with me.

13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you're reluctant to leave your TV on while you're out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. (Find it at http://www.faketv.com/)

8 MORE THINGS A BURGLAR WON'T TELL YOU:

1. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook.

2. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors.

3. I'll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he'll stop what he's doing and wait to hear it again... If he doesn't hear it again, he'll just go back to what he was doing. It's human nature.

4. I'm not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it?

5. I love looking in your windows. I'm looking for signs that you're home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I'd like. I'll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets.

6. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It's easier than you think to look up your address.

7. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it's an invitation.

8. If you don't answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in.

Protection for you and your home:

If you don't have a gun, here's a more humane way to wreck someone's evil plans for you. (I guess I can get rid of the baseball bat.):

WASP SPRAY

A friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection. She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead.

The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray, they have to get too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote. She keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for home protection... Thought this was interesting and might be of use.

FROM ANOTHER SOURCE

On the heels of a break in and beating that left an elderly woman in Toledo dead, self defense experts have a tip that could save your life.

Val Glinka teaches self-defense to students at Sylvania Southview High School . For decades, he's suggested putting a can of wasp and hornet spray near your door or bed.

Glinka says, "This is better than anything I can teach them."

Glinka considers it inexpensive, easy to find, and more effective than mace or pepper spray. The cans typically shoot 20 to 30 feet; so if someone tries to break into your home, Glinka says, "spray the culprit in the eyes". It's a tip he's given to students for decades. It's also one he wants everyone to hear. If you're looking for protection, Glinka says look to the spray.

"That's going to give you a chance to call the police; maybe get out."

Maybe even save a life.

Put your car keys beside your bed at night

Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your parents, your Dr's office, the check-out girl at the market, everyone you run across. Put your car keys beside your bed at night.

If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around. After a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there. This is something that should really be shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime.

Okay now a little short video to add some humor with a message. LOL

Thought for the day:

Okay - school number 3. He tested 7th grade in reading, beginning 6th in math (low for them) and way low in writing. He suggested repeating 5th grade. He said that sometimes the A and B's you get in middle school are pseudo grades and they really don't reflect the true grade. When people go to college now - they have to re mediate a year or so - it takes about 5 1/2 years to complete college. So we will try and apply to school number 4 this weekend. Last Christian school. Thanks for praying and I am just trying to keep you all informed - getting kind of embarrassing. lol Love, Chatty

It is good for me that burglars hate loud dogs since I have one...These tips are good

Thanks for this - it was great. We always left the tv or radio on at our house. This will come in handy in the RV - especially about the keys by the bed and hitting the car alarm button.

Praying that the best outcome will come regarding the school. xo

NO, keep telling us!!! We have all been praying and are so invested in this!! I just prayed about it last night, that God would pick the school that HE wants him to go to. I knew about the wasp spray, have been telling people about it whenever I can. But all the burglar things I read with real interest, they are GOOD!!!

That is great information. I have received this email before but I didn't know about the wasp spray.
Good luck with #4. They will take him at #3 but only if he repeats his grade, right? Have a nice weekend.

Hi Sandie...
Good post with lots of helpful information. Never thought about wasp spray. Sounds like a good idea.

Don't worry about the school GS is supposed to go to. It will be revealed to you.

"Be patient and wait upon the Lord."

"All good things come to those who wait."

"Do not be anxious about anything."

"Be still and know that I am God."

He'll show you, Sandie. He will. Hope you had a good Saturday. Susan

Tell him that I'm proud of his reading and math scores! I knew they would be higher than you thought. I'm not surprised, based on what you've told me, that the writing was the problem one. They say we should PUSH, pray until something happens. I'm PUSHing for school number 4.

And this was a wonderful post!!!
I got so many good tips. My mother-in-law was robbed, and she will probably never really get over it.
We're pretty sure that it was someone who had come to do maintenance on the house.

Do they mean repeat 5th grade and apply there next year, or they'll take him in their 5th grade?

I'm sorry, but I don't get it. He's testing very well in reading which is probably the most important subject. He's grade level in math. It's just writing where he has trouble. Here's a child that could use a little extra help in writing and the school rejects him because they want everyone above grade level in everything. I guess that's what makes them look good and that is what's important to them.

One of the columnists in our newspaper did a story on teaching today and how it's all about getting kids ready for the next state test. No time for the little extras that made learning fun. It's all about tests.

Hi Sandie,
Great information you are given this day, dear friend Sandie.
By the way, I know all these self-defense things, for I used to work at a New York Enforcement Agency long ago. I also studied Criminology Science at Law School when I was a young lady. I never completed my Law degree, but I stored like 60 credits or so. I practiced self-defense for many years, I could use a wooden nunchako easily to brake bones. If someone attacks me, I shall defend myself with the best of my ability. I lived in New York, so that great city taught me to become a tough old lady. The best weapon to me is to be on the alert at all times. I don't trust humans, I only trust God. I never answer the door, if someone does not announce his/her visit ahead of time. If I don't feel safe, I'll walk away. If someone approaches me trying to hurt me, I'll defend myself with the best of my ability. Of course, at that point, I'll be very upset and quiet dangerous. Anyway, I am a super nice and lovely old lady with my dear trusted friends, family and loved ones. I am basically a lovely person, but I don't like to get hurt...
Thank you, sweet friend Sandie, for sharing your wisdom with the world!! You are a great friend.
God bless you, and those you love!!
All the best,
Poet Starry Dawn.

I've used wasp spray before — on wasps. I didn't think of this additional use.

And taxes are the price you pay for living in a civilized society. If you can call society civilized, you're OK.

Great tip on the wasp spray. And that's why I don't use those fly by night carpet cleaners - I stick with Stanley Steamer because they screen their employees carefully.

Burglars have specialties. My friend was robbed of all their electronics. The next week they were robbed of all their jewelry. One group referred the jewelry to another group or robbers. The police said that is common.

Hello again lovely lady Sandie,
I have been thinking of this interested post of yours. So, I would like to add some more helpful tips for safe protection. Unfortunately, burglars know and study their ways ahead of time in order to approach their possible victims. I think, good folks should also have guard dogs in their house, in order to be alert at all times. I mean, dogs are alert at all times. So, dogs may announce the presence of strangers around the home. Another advice I could give to you all is to ask your family, friends, neighbors, etc. to announce themselves, to call you on the phone before they come into your house. Be aware of mailmen, plumbers, electricians, street public worker, even policemen, and so on who may pop in without notice. So please, ask for an identification at the door, and don't let them go in, if you are not sure of their true identity. Burglars -sometimes- dress with costumes to pretend they are somebody else that you may trust, like the plumber, or mailman, or electrician, or the Gas Co., or a street public worker, and so forth. Get yourself a few guard dogs to protect your home, they usually bark at strangers, for dogs and animals -in general- are very alert and protect their territory with special body signs.
I have been robbed many times. Thieves, burglars have stolen everything that I got in my house. I had to start all over again... It's hard for me to trust humans after what happened to me.
Unfortunately, if the attacker has a gun or rifle or shot gun or another fire weapon, I'll be dead in no time. So, I must be very careful at all times. I am basically scared of the crazy society that we all live in nowadays. Your wonderful blog is so inspirational with wise education for the world who read your posts. Thank you so much, sweetheart Sandie, for sharing your loving ways with the world!! You are a real blessing, a gift from our dear Lord to us, your Online friends.
Thank you also, for your loyal Online friendship and loving comments on my journals posts!!
You are a super friend, Sandie.
I hope you visit me again...
God may bless you all!!
