Saturday - Some Public Service Information

Finding Your Roots airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on PBS, starting March 25. Check local listings to find it in your area.

Thank you Jenn at Jenn's Three Graces

Wanda Sykes' family history was professionally researched for a segment of Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates Jr., a new series that will debut Sunday on PBS. While Gates, The Root's editor-in-chief and director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard, has interesting genealogical tidbits to share with all of his subjects, Sykes' report was especially revealing, according to the New York Times.

"The bottom line is that Wanda Sykes has the longest continuously documented family tree of any African American we have ever researched," Gates said. He traced her roots to her paternal ninth great-grandmother, Elizabeth Banks, a free white woman, who was punished with "thirty-nine lashes, well laid" for "fornication & Bastardy with a negroe slave," according to a stark June 20, 1683, court document from York County, Va.
He was referring to the dozens of genealogies his researchers have unearthed for his television roots franchise, which began in 2006 with the PBS series African-American Lives and includes three other genealogy-inspired shows.
Other subjects who will be featured this season on Finding Your Roots are Barbara Walters (who learns her original family surname), Harry Connick Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Margaret Cho, Kevin Bacon, Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, Branford Marsalis, Robert Downey Jr. and Dr. Sanjay Gupta. The episode with Sykes will air in May.

The Root will have clips and coverage on the series. Check out

High Pollen Count Days

From my daughter - thanks.

"Allergy Prevention Tips Based on the Local Pollen Count"

  • Avoid line drying your clothes and bedding outdoors when your local pollen count is high.
  • Keep your windows closed in your home and car to avoid letting in pollen, especially when the local pollen count is high. Set your air conditioners to re-circulate in your home and vehicle, to avoid drawing in pollen-rich outside air.
  • Bathe and shampoo hair daily before going to bed to remove pollen from hair and skin in order to keep it off your bedding. Wash bedding in hot, soapy water once a week.
  • Sign up for allergy alerts so you can easily monitor the allergy counts in your area. Forewarned is forearmed.
  • The allergy counts are the highest between 5am and 10am, so limiting your outside exposure during those times can be extremely helpful for diminishing your allergies.
  • Limit exposure on mornings that are especially warm and dry; they will usually be high local pollen count days. Days that are dry and windy also have high pollen counts.
  • Wash your face and hands after you’ve been outside to remove pollen. Also, change and wash clothes if they’ve been exposed to pollen.
  • Minimize contact with items that have come in contact with pollen, such as pets and people that have spent a large amount of time outdoors.
  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from pollen and in severe allergy cases, wear a facemask when daily pollen counts are extremely high.
  • Visit your allergist or doctor to see if the allergy shot is for you. Be consistent with your allergy medications for best results.
  • If you’re traveling, check our allergy forecasts for your destination. Also, be sure to check out our helpful traveling tips for allergy sufferers."

From Trish - thanks.

Much needed info about the pollen. It is so bad this year. The Wanda Sykes info was interesting. I enjoy those shows about finding your roots. Amazing the stuff they learn.

That age test was pretty cool but then we sort of know most of those things we aren't suppose to do:)

I love genealogy so I probably would enjoy that show. (Although my opinion on Wanda Sykes is not fit for this wholesome blog...)

I have found some humdingers in ours too. Everybody has a story!

Ooh I'm gona live til I'm 93! Love the last statement; I always say there is no such thing as perfect. Have you heard of garlic as a cure for allergies? I used to get really bad hey fever and around 3 - 4 colds a year. Since taking garlic it hasn't been a problem. My friends have also had similar results :)

Also suffering from the allergies!

And according to the list, I'm perfectly imperfect. Works for me. :)

Have a beautiful weekend, Sandie!

Happy Saturday ... how are you feeling after "that" ordeal?

I was almost too "chicken" to take the Life Calculator test ... then a bit relieved. Interesting!

Finally, I love, love, LOVE that "Thought of the Day"!

... love YOU, too :)

One of your reader said Garlic was good for allergy's I am going to give it a try. I have my windows open today may be sorry..not only for the pollen first thing when I opened them someone was burning they're garbage stunk up my house.

Great info on the pollen Sandie! I'm suppose to live to be 94 and 99 if Ieat better and exercise more. :) Happy Saturday!!!

I think stress over test results and reading/hearing what we should do will lead to an early demise. ;-) A glass of wine is good for the heart but bad for you according to a breast cancer announcement I heard recently.

Fresh air is important but don't open your windows or go outside if the pollen is high, the sun is strong or your grumpy neighbor is outside.

Sitting in front of a computer isn't a form of exercise but it certainly is good for keeping in touch, and your posts always touch me!

I don't envy you over there with all that pollen about. It wouldn't be any good for me, with all my allergies! I very much like the new header quote about kindness. I was afraid to take that age thing - just in case I didn't have long left. Hee Hee!

Very informative.

great stuff I am good till 94 or so...yippy...liked the pollen protection, cute cute header photo and I love your new Google+ photo. I have a questions for you. When I post here can you click on my name and get to me? One other blogger told me that I am in a no reply status, yet I have it opened on Google, so I wanted to make sure others were having trouble too before I continue to try and fix...thanks...Debb

I love the top quotation and the pic of the little penguins. That is very interesting about Wanda Sykes. Finding Your Roots sounds like a wonderful show.

The PBS special sounds very good. I can't watch it or tape it because my DVR already is taping things and you can't watch other things while they tape. I will have to look for a repeat on it.
I seldom watch PBS but for some reason I noticed a show that sounded good to me. Our PBS is right next to OWN. Anyway it was Finding Billy Elliot. So interesting on the boy dancers.
Since I found out about my asthma we never ever have open windows. It's been like 40 years! I will go over and check out that life expectancy. Do I want to know?

I enjoyed all your info! Interesting and Wanda Sykes - I love her on "The New Adventures of Old Christine"...Happy Saturday, GF!

Sounds like an interesting show, though, there's a similar one on one of the main channels. Kind of interesting.

And I liked that lifespan calculator, told me I'd like to 92!

Dearest Sandie,

You do like three good posts in one!
great info, all of them. The Finding Your Roots sounds like interesting. Provided that the paternal line proved to be right. One better checks the maternal line for more security; given that among African American (hate to use this...!) 70% of children are born out of wedlock. We always have to follow the FACTS and not EMOTIONS.
I'm lucky for having my roots in a book, dating from 1560 till present. That is a wealth of information!
The pollen is bad indeed. We look forward to the time it all gets washed away. Right now we have so many catkins from our live oak tree...
Love to you,

Mariette

Hi Sandie, YES---a perfect person doesn't exist for sure!!!!

I've been lucky since I don't have allergies ... Springtime has never bothered me (thank goodness)...

Finding your Roots looks like a great show. I love Genealogy shows.

Have a wonderful Sunday.
Hugs,
Betsy

I remember seeing this show or one very similar and it was fascinating. Thanks for the head's up. Pollen season has not yet arrived, though I'm certain it's on the way. The peepers are singing so that's a sure sign of spring.

I will have to look for that show. I really like Wanda Sykes. She is so funny. Allergy season - not fun!

Thank you for the information on Finding your Roots that will air tonight. I am going to record it. I do not watch TV much, but this sounds interesting.

I see you have a new profile photo. I like it, the light is perfect and we can see you better.

That is very interesting about Wanda Skytes! I watched the show last night with Helen Hunt. She had an amazing genelogy find about her family too! It's like the celebs hit pay dirt with their family trees.

Tree pollen is real high here right now. I seen how the trees leaves opened up a lot from noon to this evening!

Hugs,
Angela

Took that age calculation test; they said 86; it was fun to read it go up and down based on the questions I answered. My mom lived to 85-1/2 so we'll see. Whatever God thinks best is good enough for me.

Interesting about pollen counts; I'll have to watch that for Koda, he seems to be the more allergic one in our family, LOL!

Have a great Sunday Sandie!

Have been thinking of you...hope the colonoscopy was a breeze and that you are feeling good.

For the pollen proofing- you don't need to shampoo daily, especially if you have dry hair. Wet your hair and run some conditioner through it...it will remove the pollen just as well and not dry your hair. ;)

Today was my first real day of bad allergies. We came to visit some of my children and grandchildren in Utah. Ahhchooo.

I to the age calculator, and was somewhat surprised. It said I should live to age 96. I hope I do. My mother, who is in perfect health, turns 96 in May.

Tweedles -- that's me said...

this might sound crazy- but I don't want to look to see how long I will live. I think it would freak me out- more than I already am!
Happy weekend!

Bear has no allergy problems, so I don't have to worry. Actually, that's not quite true. I'm allergic to hard work.

Both my son and I have been busy working on our family tree. My wife's side goes back to Cromwell in England. My side, not so far.

According to the calculator, I will lived to be 93. Not surprising. My mom lived to 94, my dad to 95. So, I've got about another 30 years. If I don't get shot in some war, or. . . . No, we won't go there.

Gosh this was all so interesting and informative. I can't imagine that poor woman receiving 39 lashes, how horrible. And in those days the white men slept with black women, I bet they didn't get the same. I wasn't aware of the pollen at certain times of the day? or to wash your hands and face after being exposed..excellent!!!
I am an allergy sufferer.. Now I am off the see how long I will live?? My mum has just turned 94, so I hope I don't go that long. xxxx

I've heard great things about that Roots show. I wish we got PBS (but no other channels ;-))

Yes, allergy season is in full swing here.

Betty said...

What a bummer. I looked in the Houston Chronicle this morning and didn't see it listed for tonight. I was going to try and tape it because it conflicts with The Amazing Race. I'll have to check the PBS station here and see if it's airing another time.

Betty said...

Oh great...they're airing it on one of their other channels that we don't get. We have basic cable.

Thanks for telling us about Finding Your Roots.I hadn't heard of it. I do watch "Who do you think you are?" and really enjoy it. I'll be sure to watch "Finding.." tonight. Thanks for the tips on allergies. Isn't this pollen crazy? Our red tips are sending up clouds of pollen.
Hugs and have a great week,
