Tuesday Helpful Hints from Chatty

CHATTY'S HELPFUL HINTS

From Reader's Digest for August.and Jean.

1.  Did you know you can bake with avocados instead of butter?  Over 75 % of the fat in the versatile 'alligator pear' is the healthful kind, and it'll add near 20 vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients to cookie, cake, and muffin recipes.  Though the ration may vary slightly by recipe, swap one cup of mashed avocado for one cup of butter.

 (Thank you Jean P.)

2.Pick the yellowest ears of corn - you''ll reap 7% of Vitamin A from yellow corn versus from white corn.

3.  Cook carrots whole - retain 25% more falcarinol, a cancer-fighting compound, if they aren't chopped before they're boiled.

4.  Dice the garlic and let it rest for ten minutes.  Heating garlic right away diminishes its anticancer properties.

5. PICK DARK OVER OTHER KINDS OF CHOCOLATE - more than 70 % cacaos.  In one study volunteers who ate 3.5 ounces of it every day for a week raised their 'good' HDL cholesterol by 9%.

There is an 86% cocao one - Debbie told me about them.

Wow! I love those hints. We are growing an avo tree...Ray used to hate them but now he loves the taste. I mash them and put them on toast with pepper and salt for breakfast.. it tastes like scrambled eggs.. Now I can cook with them in place of butter and so much healthier.. The garlic hint is VERY good to know. and carrots, thats the way I will go from now on! xxx

for pete's sake, now I will have to buy a bag of doritos to see if they burn.. you know i love fire...
i have a friend who uses mashed avocado as mayo on her sandwiches. i think they are yucky but bob loves them.since i don't cook, i will not have a chance to try them as butter. anyway the darn squirrels are eating all of our avocado as fast as they can

I do remember using an electric knife when I used to freeze corn from the garden. It really went quite quickly. And I do love dark chocolate. Thanks for the reminder. I haven't had much of it lately and need to get some. Hope you have a terrific Tuesday!

Good idea about the bundt pan. I just switched to dark chocolate and now I'm glad I did because my good colestrol is low.

Good tidbits as always. I will try to eat more dark chocolate but I don't ever think I can give up my milk chocolate :)

I did know some, I did not know about the avocado, but it makes sense to me. :)

I do know avocado is so good for you! Didn't know it could be used instead of butter but it makes sense! Happy Day!

just groaning at the 20 extra years...

the bundt cake pan is pretty brilliant. :)

Excellent tips. Good to know. I am going to use the bundt pan tip.

Pat MacKenzie said...

Good stuff. I already do/know some of the ideas and now that we have a fire pit I'll stock up on dorritos for kindling, and avocado, which I love, instead of butter. I always learn something when I come visit you. Thanks.

Too bad avocados cost so much. I love them.

I love "the Laugh"! I think I am living those 20 extra years right now!!!!! So funny. Great tips, Miss Chatty. Enjoyed it!

Wow- I did not know that abut avocados! And anytime I hear about chocolate being good for us, I'm all for it!

Great tips indeed. I knew about the grapes, but of course I would.

Loved the laugh. I'm almost there.

The lift is spot on.

Have a terrific day honey. Big hugs. ☺

Ohhh, I wish I had thought of the bundt pan many years ago when I froze a lot of corn! Great hints, Sandie. Have a wonderful day!

Betsy Banks Adams said...

Great hints today, Sandie. I had never heard that about avocado. Interesting...

We love white corn... Darn!!!! Guess I'll have to go back to the yellow stuff. ha

Hubby eats one piece of dark chocolate everyday for his health. I don't eat it --simply because I don't want the calories...

Hugs,
Betsy

These are fantastic!! I can't decide which one I love the most, but that one about swapping out avocados for butter is something new to me.

Now, don't you just have to wonder WHO looked at a bag of Doritos and thought, "I'll bet this would make great kindling...?"

Trying to get caught up yet again. If I do not slow down, I'm going to spin right off the side of the globe. I just know it.

Great hints- have a fantastic week Sandie!

I can't imagine cooking with the avocado but I eat them all the time! We had corn on the cob twice last week. It sure is yummy. Like the Doritos for kindling....that's different. Lot's of interesting facts today....thank you dear friend. Debby

Theresa Mahoney said...

Great tips! Did you know that you can cook corn in the oven at 350 degrees for about 20 to 30 minutes, leaving the husk on. Take out of the oven, chop end of husk off, squeeze the cob right out and voila! No messy husk or corn silk to peel away.

Ida said...

Interesting. I'm not sure about using avocado instead of butter but one never knows until they try.

renae said...

Oh Sandie, I loved the Lift today. So needed and so true. Thanks for the good 'use' for Doritos. I'll have to let my son in law know that one. He loves those things. hahahahaha

Wonderful info today!

1. I love avocados! And yes, it's great that they have the *good* kind of fat.
2. Didn't know that one.
3. Also didn't know that.
4. My goodness, such great, healthy tips.
5. I knew this fact. That's why I've made chocolate one of my major food groups.

As always, I come away with useful information, and a good laugh, and something to ponder.

I am a sucker for healthy tips. The avocado/butter replacement is intriguing.

barbara l. hale said...

Great tips! I joke that avocado is the perfect substitute for mayonnaise but that's because I don't like mayonnaise. But in place of butter...great idea. And it's always dark chocolate for me!

Ginny Hartzler said...

All of these are new to me except the chocolate! Sandra is making me howl with laughter right now!!! Let's just hope she doesn't burn the house down!

Nonnie said...

Okay, I love the tip about the corn and the bundt pan. Corn flying all over the counter is a problem for me when I cut the corn off the ears.
The dark chocolate is always within reach and I make sure I have my daily dose of it. The Laugh was hilarious, but sad.

ALL chocolate is good but dark is better

Who would have thought you could use Doritos as kindling in a pinch...your always find the most interesting information. I love dark chocolate so i am glad to hear it is the most healthy.

Love the tips, Sandie!! :D Especially the avocado one...that has inspired a sweet idea I must test soon.

Thank you for dropping by and commenting. Your kind words me so much. Sadly, though I think we're the only two on team biscoff...No worries we can take them.

Have a fabulous day.

Thanks for all the tips, but that cartoon made me laugh the most. I do sometimes wonder if that's all we all are doing, trying to prolong our lives to live an extra 20 years in pain. I do sometimes wonder if its better to enjoy the ride a bit more and accept that that will make the journey shorter.

Those grapes in the wine glasses would be good for Halloween, they look a bit scary to me!
Love that cartoon about the twenty years left for being healthy! LOL

Hootin Anni said...

I just cracked up on the 'extra' years of life comic!

As for the avocado vs. butter...does it make a difference in taste you wonder?!! Food after all is about the 'taste'.

I've done this with frozen fruit...not just grapes in wine. And dark chocolate is what we eat...never milk chocolate.

Hootin Anni said...

PS...I kinda like what I read on LLCoolJoe's comment.

Carol said...

I love the grape idea! I currently take my grapes after washing and put them in a BIG zip lock bag, empty a package of lime sugar free Jell-O into the bag and shake so each grape has some Jello-O on it (you can use any flavor of Jello-O). Then I freeze the grapes. When hungry for a sweet I pop a few lime/grapes. YUMMY!

Thanks for the tips and humor.

Love to you!

I'm definitely trying the avocado thing! Hope it doesn't make baked goods taste avocado-y. :-) Love that comic w/ the old guy slumped over. Sometimes I wonder is all the struggling to maintain a healthy lifestyle is worth it!!
