What'll ya have?
Not correct English, unless you are at the famous Varsity Restaurant in Atlanta, GA. You go up to the counter they say "What'll ya have...What'll ya have?" They have been saying it since 1928. So famous Clark Gable visited it in 1939, Ryan Seacrest, Bush, Clinten, Carter and more! I went to it in the mid 50's with my dad and mom. They had separate rooms with chairs like desks in an elementary school classroom and televisions. You would go in the room that had a show on your liked. Yes, it has changed since then, but it has good memories for me.

Things have changed since I was a kid though - as all things do.
Because of Covid - they no longer serve at the cars.
Everyone must come in.
One of the rooms - with a TV - now a big screen tv.
Well, it was a trip down memory lane for me. Hopefully you learned something about Atlanta. No, not the best restaurant or the healthiest - but an icon of the area. Right downtown. Great for UGA football games. Okay GA Tech games too.
Y'all need to come on down. What'll ya have?

ReplyDeleteforgot to say, i have never seen or heard of the Varsity, but have never been in Atlanta, just around the outside loop trying to pass it by. this is a great post and I would eat there if I could.

ReplyDeleteOh, I've heard that saying, "What'll ya have?" This looks like a delightful restaurant, kind of diner style. Is the food good? That's too bad they don't serve at the cars anymore. I remember we had a place in my hometown that they came out to the cars. It was so convenient. Looks like your husband is enjoying his meal. I love Princess Sassy Pants quotes and pictures! ReplyDeleteI would think it would be the opposite when you still have covid restrictions. Outside would to me be better than everybody being inside and "breathing". Do they still require masks?

Wow, the statistics about the food they serve is mind boggling. And it is cool that the term "carhop" originated there. This is an awesome place! So how far do you live from it, and how often do you go? Their onion rings look amazing.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to say a thought I had. You would think with Covid, they would close the inside and only serve in cars. That is how most around here did it. But they did the opposite and made people come inside!

ReplyDeleteIt sounds a little bit like a place Tom used to go in downtown Chicago -- Billy Goats. He says from the minute you walk in the door they start hollering at you, "What you want?" It's all part of the schtik I suppose but I told Tom, "That's so rude." Knowing me, I'd probably turned around and walk out. Have you ever heard of it?
You know I know the Varsity! Make mine a chili dog!! Only thing, I can't stand to drive to Atlanta now. I have to take I-20 and I-75 to get there. Did you see on news that they are two of the most dangerous highways in the country? Yikes! I believe it!! Oh well!!

Those iconic places are so special. Most towns have them, I think. Ours is Reececliff. Not the best food but worth a visit because of the history. Thanks for sharing the memories!! xo

It sounds like my kind of restaurant and serves some of my favorite things. I'm sure it brings back memories for you when you go there. Never spent much time at all in Georgia, but I do think we should celebrate our home state !
