Wednesday - Happy Hump Day

This is a tree in our yard - my camera is just a little one - but as I pulled out of my driveway I looked at it and all the leaves were just falling down like snow - I somehow didn't a one falling down - but you should have seen the leaves that day it was so pretty and serene.

This is fall in Atlanta.

Okay today I am showing you my basement or shall I say a third of it. It is my hubs man cave?????? His hobby is model planes. He has them everywhere.

On the floor and on the wall and on the tables and on - well you get my drift.

Now he has a nice work chair - special lights - a heater for winter - a little icebox - telephone - and a television with cable.

Oh yeah and lots of boxes of parts. And a big drawing table to work at. Now he has been doing this since we got married so yes he has a lot of stuff.

Oh I forgot all the tools he has too. I have a couple of questions. How in the world would we ever downsize? I mean this all takes up 1/3 of the basement so it would take up 1/3 of a house. We'd have to get a house just for him - hmmm not a bad idea sometimes.

And paints and glues. Second question - what in the world in this part of the basement looks like fun? Nothing to me.

Except the fact that he has his man cave and likes to go down to it a lot. Now that he is retired - it is a great thing. And - now here comes the positive spin you knew would come - I'm happy he has a place to go spend some time in! And he flies them too. So this is a great thing now that he is home all the time.

Retirement - they have to have something to do!

(Okay now that was funny - at least to me - I am laughing out loud.)

Thought for the day:

Old age, to the unlearned, is winter; to the learned, it’s harvest time.

-Yiddish Saying

(I'm harvesting these days. I think when I was younger I didn't look at his hobby as positively as I do now - years ago I wanted more help with the kids, more of his time, more help around the house, etc. - now I'm glad he has it. When you get older things change. And hopefully you become BETTER AND NOT BITTER!)

Oh yes, dear Chatty, when they are retired, they HAVE to have something to do my friend!! Love it! What a wonderful cave your hubby has down there. Gosh, and he looks so organized with it all. Lovely that he actually gets to fly the planes as well. He certainly has got an excellent hobby there. The photo of the tree is beautiful - so calm and serene.

OMG Sandie ... My DH would be in hog-heaven, down in your basement! This reminds me of OUR garage ... yep, my DH has been a model enthusiast for years and years, building and flying WWII-era planes.
... Personally, I don't get it -- but rather he do that than hang at a local pool hall or something! :)

I read your post and think of my hubby who has so much hunting stuff and tools that every time we move I say we just need a small house and HUGE barn for him and all his stuff. That is funny that both our hubby's occupy so much of the square footage.

Love your perspective! Looks like a fun hobby. Thanks for sharing a bit of it with us. :)

I want a man cave! Well, I would swap out my crafting stuff for the plane stuff but your man has it made! :)

wow, he does love model planes, my husband did for a while too, they need new interests or expand old ones after retirement,, its hard for men sometimes I think afeter retirement,,your hubby has a great space for sure, it looks as big as our apartment!!Have a great day!!

I think that is neat... He ought to sell some of his planes ---and make some money!!!!! So many men don't have hobbies... Your hubby obviously has a great hobby ---and something which keeps him busy... For that, you can be thankful.

Luckily, George has alot of interests and hobbies --but at least his don't take up that much room...

I do love the way he has the 'man cave' all fixed up with all of the modern conveniences... Is there a bathroom down there also? All he needs is a BED down there... ha ha

Hugs,
Betsy

Can't speak to a Mr. retiring, but as for me, I am busier, less organized, and more stressed that when I was working. Think it has something to do with that little word, "No"

A hobby is a great thing! A man cave where they can spend time doing their thing is wonderful. Mr ALC has one for his radios and cameras and I am so glad! I need my space also! Love you, Linda

Hi Sandie, I think it's great that your hubby has a hobby! At least his man cave looks organized. I don't know what my hubby will do when he retires. He'll need something to do, but he doesn't have any particular hobby. Unless you call watching TV a hobby!
Have a wonderful day.

I like his man cave, Sandie! And what a great hobby for him to do! Its neat that he flies them in addition to making them. Seems like he has all the comforts of home down there too! I totally agree, everyone needs something to do when they retire; sounds good that he had that already in place when he did so!

I've been meaning to write an email to you, just to chat, but the time seems to run away every day. Hope all is going well; you are on my mind a lot.

looks very much like my hubbies garage/workshop but I think your hubby just might have more STUFF than mine. i love for mine to spend time in the garage, gives me time for blogging and keeps him out of my hair.

Nice post Sandie,
That is some organized basement you have there :)
If Paul gets his way, he'll have a whole studio one day. I don't mind tho, as long as I am allowed to have my little painting corner I'm fine lol!
Enjoy your day my friend!
Hugs x

Hi Sandie...Loved your leaf photo. I didn't know Georgia had such lovely foliage in the fall. Now I do.

Also think it's great your hubs has the man cave and a special hobby.

Hey! He should contact the local library or empty store front and put some of his finished models on display! That way, other people could see his good work!

My hubs LOVES his man cave. Remember, I even posted on it? He has a favorite stuffed, soft chair down there that he relaxes in while watching the news, his desk, bookshelves, you name it. He could easily move in to his man cave. ha ha

Take care and have a great day. Susan

Phil's hobby is flying remote controlled gliders and planes, so is Sandra's husband, Bob. Phil belongs to BRASS, Blue Ridge Area Soaring Society. The basement is full of his planes and plane parts. And he has taken over my glue gun, for the occasional crash.

Glad your hubby has a hobby and you're both happy. :) Hobbies are good for everyone. My hubby has a couple of helicopter models. Keeps him out of trouble. ha ha!

MunirGhiasuddin said...

That is a great hobby. That must keep him quite busy. Does he happen to share any of that with your grand kids?

You are very fortunate to have a place to put a retired hubby and all his stuff. My hubby has not retired yet, but when he does, I might ask to rent out my neighbor's basement for him (even though we have one of our own). Maybe they will adopt him.

Oh, my... this looks so familiar. We sold "the big house" when we moved south for Terry's work and moved into a condo.

Needless to say, we do not have room for 1. his man cave "sports room" that was in the lower level of our trilevel house,or his 2 1/2 car garage full of stuff, and his separate workshop that had a garage door, so it was big enough for a vheicle. All of these spaces had golf stuff and tools in them. Good Grief as Charlie Brown says.

Almost looks like my Hubs side of the basement... Wait, he steals the whole basement and we have a huge one.
On one side there are lots of tables for card games. I have a little spot where I have my exercise equipment.

The other side looks like the pictures you showed... only no airplanes ... just stuff he has collected for YEARS!!

The tree is beautiful. I think it is awesome that he has a hobby that he loves. My husbands is guns which are all locked up. He does range shooting. I miss having a basement.

Seems that by him having his space, it gives you your space too-enjoy:@)

It looks like he has a great set-up, and lucky for you he has it where it is instead of in 1/3 of the living room.

I used to love making model planes and cars as a kid. His planes are wonderful. My husband's interest lies in computers. When he retires he might make some new programs.

Bev said...

Wow he has a neat mess down there!! Yes they do need a hobby!!

Janie Fox said...

you cracked me up. Mine is still busy busy working but if he ever retires he will have a hard time because he only works. But he can do anything so maybe I'll have enough projects to keep him busy.I'll start my list!

Debbie said...

I agree that it's great that he has something that he loves. I've been worried about my husband because he works so hard and doesn't seem to have as much time for things he loves. I wish he had something like that.

(I also wish we had a basement. That would be a major different between your part of GA and mine.)

i think that is a wonderful hobby! and it will keep him busy. your basement looks better than mine! have a great week, oh and i LOVE your tree!

Unknown said...

Oh, I used to love building models, but my hands are way too shaky to do it now.

Oh, Sandie... that last statement... oh, how true. Life does change us, doesn't it? ;)

Hubby has a SERIOUS hobby! LOL! And, I thought my yarn stash was something! LOL! Glad he has something he loves... we all need that. blessings ~ tanna

Wow, that's a lot of airplanes! My husband's junk takes up our basement too.

Oh, how this California girl longs for a basement - or even an attic. We have NO place for storage, let alone a "Man Cave." My husband does like to tool around in the garage, though. And you're right - after retirement those boys of ours need a hobby. For their sakes, and for ours!

OK, Sandie - I had to laugh at something I noticed. In the second picture of the garage, I happened to notice that a baby's changing table had been converted to shelves. I don't know why that made me laugh so much! Maybe it was just the sweet irony of middle age - finding new uses for stuff not needed!! Makes me wish I had kept the crib - oh, the storage space that would have made!

Hee - hee.

I certainly hope that my husband finds a hobby before he retires otherwise he is going to make me crazy.

Angela said...

Wow! He does love his planes! I didn't know he was a crafter Sandie! I think it's great for him to have something to work on. My husband has a barn that is the size of our house that is all his! lol But he doesn't hang in it. It's where he stores his stuff mostly.

Hugs,
Angela

I think it's great that he has a hobby. There's a park not too far from here where there's a runway for people like your husband to fly their planes.

I'm so envious of your basement. We've never lived in a house with a basement. If we had one here it would be full of water...basements are few are far between in this area. My parents' house had a basement and they sure come in handy, but I guess you have more "stuff" with a basement.

In Georgia the trees turn pretty colors. How neat!
