Wednesdays Hodgepodge

Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 133

It's that time again...answer the questions on your own blog then hop back to From This Side of the Pond tomorrow (Wednesday) to link answers with all your peeps. Everyone is welcome to play along-

1. Picture postcards were first printed back in the mid-1800's and deltiology is the official name for postcard collecting. When did you last send a postcard?  Receive one? Do you save postcards sent to you? Do you collect and/or send postcards when you travel?

The last time I received a post card was from when my 2 doctors reminded me to make appointments to see them - about a month ago.  Gosh I can't remember when I sent the last postcard.  I guess when I go on trips I buy postcards of things I didn't get a picture of and bring them home for my picture book or to give the family. I haven't been on a trip forever!  No I don't collect postcards.
2. What treat do you most like to indulge in while on vacation?
The most important thing to me - after I decide where I'm going is the bed and pillows - I'm really picky - who can go on a trip with a bad bed?  Of course where I'm going, what amenities, and what is around to see or do is important too!

3. Are you good at hiding your feelings?
Yes and no.  I can hide them for awhile - to certain people - but when I've had enough I blow!  Not very often.  Of course their are exceptions to every rule.

4. Does your town/city/county still deliver telephone books to your home? Do you check the yellow pages when searching for a local business number or has the internet replaced the phone book in your home?
Years ago we had about ten books delivered.  Now there are two small ones.  We recycle them right away.  We all use the internet exclusively.  The phone books are not like they used to be - we find them totally useless.
5. Would you rather be first or last?
LAST - it is stress free to be the last.  More independent.  You do not have to be as responsible. You can move at your own speed.  I worked in the school system for years - all the kids wanted to be first?  WHY?  They always were the ones in trouble, but I could never convince them to be last.

6. July is National Park and Recreation Month (in America, but everyone can still play along)...where and when were you last in a park?  Did you participate in any recreational activities while you were there?
No, we used to when we lived in a neighborhood in Chicago, but Atlanta is different - we have them - but they are not a neighborhood type of thing.  You have to go into Atlanta and it's always packed and the traffic is bad - in Lake Zurich, IL - the parades would be right in our neighborhood.  I love Atlanta though.
7.  What was one of your worst ideas?
Buying a hot tub.  It was expensive $$$$$$ and we used it for two years and closed it up.  It's like brand new just sitting there.  I want to sell it and don't know how!

8.  Insert your own random thought here.
Yesterday was rough.  Poor grandson did not get contacts - he just couldn't get them in.  We went to lunch and I was cleaning his glasses and my daughter threw my tray away for me - at Taco Bell.  She ended up throwing my check and credit card out.  I have to garbage dive.  Oh course I did have plastic gloves on the restaurant gave me.  Then I realized that I had cleaned the grandsons  glasses with oxi-clean spray  instead of eye glass cleaner (I carry two little bottles in my purse) - and it started eating off the lens resistant coating!  They looked like spider webs all over the glass! Guess what happened - we had to buy him a new pair of glasses - $145!!

Oh Sandie, I haven't read this all yet, but the last two. I'm so sorry to hear about what happened with your grandson's glasses, but it reminded me that when I was in the 6th grade, I accidentally threw my glasses away in the trash in the school cafeteria. When I realized it, my Mom and Great-Grandma headed out to the city dump to try to work their way through the trash and find my glasses. Is that a sad story or what? They could not find my glasses and it was necessary to buy another pair. So sorry to hear about all those things and that your grandson can't wear the contacts. Maybe he can try again someday.
We have a hot tub, too, but at least it isn't as permanent as the in-ground pool we put in our back yard many years ago. It proved to be a blessing/curse and we were glad to be rid of it when we moved.
You could probably list it on Craig's List and it would have to be taken apart and hauled away.

Cheri said...

Kelly should have done the garbage diving, but I guess that is what moms do. I would've loved to have seen that. LOL

Hot tub...try selling on Craigslist. Check them out to see what hot tubs might be selling for to know how to price yours...good luck.

Heck, if you have an craiglist account, post it on there, you'd be surprise at who would make offers. Or try putting an ad in your local penny saver.

As for the contacts/glasses...oh my what a day that was. Hope today's better than yesterday.

Well Bless Your Heart! So sorry about all your troubles yesterday. I'm surprised you didn't have a melt down right then and there.

Thanks goodness today is a new day and I wish you love and smiles!

I am sorry to hear about your grandsons glasses. I did that to a new piece of furniture at my mothers house. I thought I would dust for her and picked up a bathroom spray instead. It took the varnish off all her new end tables.
I hope you find someone to sell the hot tub to.

oh no on the new glasses and the dumpster diving, even with gloves...when my son was 16 he wanted contacts, he is now 46, so that was many years ago. i spent the money and he wore them a few times and hated them and refused to wear them. i got him new glasses and said if you ever want contacts again, they will not be with my money... some people can wear them and some can't..
as for number 3
YIKES I can't even hide my feelings in email or comments and i real life if by some small chance i hold back my verbal response my face always shows just what i think. when i was working my manager told me several times after meetings that i needed to work on controlling my face from showing what i really thought.

Oh no! What a day! Can't imagine digging through trash at Taco Bell. Ewww. And then the glasses fiasco-yikes! I hope today is much improved!

Does your town have a local newspaper? I'd advertise the hot tub there.

Jeanie said...

Oh, Sandie, I hope today is a better day for you.
I agree that Craigslist would be the way to sell the hot tub.

Here's hoping today will be 100% better than your yesterday.

oh no on the glasses!!!

I wish that you guys had some kind of warranty on the glasses.
I have learned my lessons about credit cards and checks. Now I hold on to my card and give it to the person involved and remind them that they have my card. Also working in customer service has taught me a lot.

Maybe grandson can try contacts again in a couple of years - I didn't get them until I was 16 (and my mother made me earn the money to play for them.) :) I can remember how hard it was to put them in and take them out at first.

I actually had a postcard collection when I was a girl scout - I got a badge for it. I love to get them and have them on a dish on my bookcase.

hi Sandie! Many great ideas here. That is so interesting about being last. It bugs me to be last. hahahahaha.

Sandee said...

I'm so sorry about the dumpster diving. I hate that when it happens and the glasses. Well that's a lot of money for a boo boo like that. Bugger.

Have a terrific day honey. Big hugs. ☺

Oh my- sounds like an expensive outing!
For selling your hot tub- try advertising on your facebook page...or look for a local resale for your county or town on facebook- we have about ten in my area and we are out in the country- so you should be able to find several.

TARYTERRE said...

Sorry you had one of those days. Hope today will be better.

Shelly said...

Oh, no! So sorry about the glasses/ dumpster diving experience- not fun! Just out of curiosity, why did you quit using your hot tub?

Debby@Just Breathe said...

I have trouble with strange beds. I like when we travel by car so I can bring my own pillow! I recycle the old book and the new phone book sits in the drawer until next year. California is filled with so many National Park, I love it! We haven't used our hot tub much either. I didn't want it. We had a ground built in one in our last house which we used often. Ours now is now empty because it was leaking and needs a new top :( $$$$$ So sorry about the glasses. Debby

Fun, fun, fun.

1. I can't remember the last time I sent a postcard, or when I received one. But yes, for many years I collected postcards on our trips.

2. I really like eating out when we're on vacation. We don't do it much here at home, so it's a treat.

3. Nope. Sometimes I try to hide them, but evidently my face betrays me (kinda like it's betraying me now with wrinkles).

4. Nothing gets delivered to our front door. Have to drive into town to get our mail. But yes, we do have a local phone book - and yes, we have used it for local business.

5. I'd rather be in the middle of the pack, truth be told. Though in some situations, I like being the leader.

6. About 3 years ago we were in Zion National Park. We went on an overnight, 16-mile hike down the canyon on the Virgin River. I am glad to have lived to tell the tale.

7. One of my worst ideas was getting a *temporary* storage unit. I still have it - though I am NOT telling you how long I've had it!!

8. My random thought? I'm sorry, but I chuckled at your *spectacles* spectacle!

Yesterday sounds awful for you. I hate to think of your garbage diving experience and to top if off with the glasses. Oh my. Hope today is much better.

So sorry to hear that your grandson can't wear contacts...my daughter can't, either. She has a very severe astigmatism and we've tried every kind under the sun! Sorry that you had to buy replacement glasses. When it rains, it pours, right? Be sure to stop by my blog today to enter my Easy Canvas Giveaway...it's a good one! :)

Dear Sandie, I do get post cards for our dental appt. reminders.
I have not sent a post card in years!!
I really am not that good at hiding my feeling. I suppose I wear my heart on the outside.
I have not had a phone book delivered in years.
I suppose Jones beach and Robert Moses are beautiful state parks but haven't been to visit them in a while.
I hope that everyone has a happy day. Blessings dear. Catherine xo

Susan said...

Holy smokes, Sandie. Yesterday for you was one for the books. Glad it's "ov-ah."

Wow. Didn't know Oxi-clean was that potent. Yikes.

Enjoyed reading your answers to the questions. Susan

Ginny Hartzler said...

Oh my gosh, your Taco Bell story is awful!!! BUT WHY do you carry around Oxi-clean? It comes in tiny bottles? Now you have me interested, and I want to know! I always carry wipes and Shout packets. I am a real germ freak and even soak down the grocery cart handles. Also we have to be so careful because of Ella. Is your grandson very disappointed? Do any kids have glasses in his class or is he the only one? I actually think he looks so cute in the glasses, and tell him for me they make him look very smart and girls like that! I don't know that contacts are very good for your eyes anyway. I agree about being last except when it comes to waiting in line or on the phone!

Inger said...

Looks like you had a Murphy's Law day! It was fun to read your answers though and I love the quote at the top of your page. So very true and important to understand.

Terri D said...

Oh my! Hope you found your credit card! Too bad about the glasses - who would have thought about the coating!? Not me! Whew! My answer to first or last, was also last. Last is always good!!

That stinks about your grandson's glasses. :(

I always send postcards. We got one a couple of weeks ago from my in-laws who were visiting the Dakotas.

My MIL bought an expensive hot tub, used it one season and it sits now covered and unused.

I like to go first. People allow for mistakes without ridicule when you go first. And not to be contrary (hehe) but I was an Honor student always...and going first was always my preference (as was sitting at the front of the class). :)

My kids like to go last. One of them was an Honor student. One was hard to get graduated and hated school. One is average but could be an AP student if she applied herself more. ;) The little one's too little to know. I hope he's a nerd who loves to study (like me). Dad hopes he's a cool jock (like him). ;)

Aww... I feel for your grandson because I spent 6 hours at the eye doctors trying to get them in. Never was successful. Sorry to hear about the dumpster dive...At Taco Bell - no less!!

Searching through a bin for something that has been tossed by mistake is not something I have had to do in a long time the most rememberable time was when I thought I had tossed my engagement ring in the bin......

I do collect post cards of places I visit

jp@A Green Ridge said...

Holy moose-poops! And glasses are NOT cheap! Most insurances don't pay for the darn glasses...:( so that's sad/bad news as far as I'm concerned!..>:)JP

1. Not for a long time.
2.Sleep when I was working, life is one big vacation now.
3.no
4.Small local ones and yes I do use them.
5. If it is something good -first.
If it is something bad - last.
6. A while ago.
7. We put a spa bath in in the middle of a drought and we had water restrictions at that time so we couldn't use it so we never used it and now because we always have a shower and the shower is over it the spar bath is just a big shower tray but we don't need a shower curtain, we seem to have bathroom follies.
8.My back hurts today.

Dee said...

Oh Sandie....what a day!!!! I wanted to laugh and cry for you at the same time. I can see why you liked my
"now what" doodle :) My son could not or would not wear his contacts. We got a tiny bit of our payment back. Post cards and telephone books are quickly falling by the curb. Gee..soon we will not need pencils or paper or........I truly hope today is better.

Oh my gosh, what a day! They can only improve, at least I really hope so.

For selling the hot tub, try listing it on Craig's List. I know a lot of folks buy and sell there.

Take care and have a good day tomorrow!

Oh Sandie, I shouldn't laugh ... I really shouldn't. (Slap my face.) Your experience sounds like something out of an "I Love Lucy" episode.
Nevertheless, I'm sure you handled everything with a smile ... and made Andy feel better.

Better days straight ahead!

Oh wow about the glasses...
I thought it was a good idea when I wore glasses to clean them with some cleaner, Eye doctor said NO!
You ladies carry EVERYTHING in that purse, I cannot believe you guys don't build muscles on muscles carrying it around.

As always I love your answers. Great thoughts going into that. I liked it again.
((HUGS)) \PS: I forgot how a child can wear you out!!!! hahahahaa

Marie said...

sorry about the glasses..yuck and ouch! Hopefully your grandson can try contacts later and they will work for him. :)
I wish I had a hot tub! It makes my back feel so much better. If you really want to get rid of it I would just list it on Craigslist.
hugs,
Marie

oh wow, what a day you had. Digging through the garbage would have been bad enough but then to have to buy the new glasses. YIKES

Have you ever thought of listing your hot tub on Craig's list?

I'm a little late because I was trying to use bloglovin' and get used to it, and it wouldn't let me comment! I finally took off the dunce hat and tried holding down the shift key when I hit "comment", and well... here I am.

I loved your answers, but I nearly forgot about them when I read the final comment. Oh No!!! I feel bad for him that he can't wear the contacts, and I feel just as bad for you with the glass debacle. I would never have known that, and I will NOT forget it!

(I agree about parks in Atlanta. Savannah has nice little ones scattered in the neighborhoods.)
