Happy Birthday Christa McAuliffe - September 2

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe."– Anatole France

Christa McAuliffe? Do you remember . . .

Christa McAuliffe Biography
NASAEducator. Born Sharon Christa Corrigan on September 2, 1948, in Framingham, Massachusetts. Christa McAuliffe was the first American civilian selected to go into space in 1985. A well-regarded and beloved high school teacher in Concord, New Hampshire, she had developed a course called “The American Woman.” This course helped her win a competition held by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to decide who would be the first teacher in space.

After being selected in 1985, Christa McAuliffe went through extensive training at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. On January 28, 1986, McAuliffe boarded the space shuttle Challenger at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Along with the rest of the crew, she waited for her field trip to space to begin. This was not to be, unfortunately. The space shuttle exploded shortly after liftoff, killing everyone on board. This tragic accident sent shock waves around the world.

Quotes:
Reach for it, you know. Go push yourself as far as you can.
What are we doing here? We're reaching for the stars.
May your future be limited only by your dreams!

Think about this - she was one out of 11,000 applicants! She thought she was lucky and the other 10,999 thought they were unlucky. In one second all that changed. I guess the thing it makes me think about is - what a difference a day makes.

Now, I really had never heard of these women or their sport, but I found this interesting. The time they must have put in their practice to be able to do this. Amazing.

Hi Chatty -- I'll never forget the day that happened. I cried. We visited the Kennedy Space Ctr last winter and I thought about her and as you said "what a difference a day makes". Your post was great.

Again, thanks for visiting our blog and your comment on our Oregon Trail connection. You had a lot of questions about RVing -- I'll try to answer them in an e-mail soon.

But she got to do something most of us didn't even dream of doing. We can live our whole life and never experience the thrill she must have felt just to get on that shuttle. I know her life was cut short but she lived life while she was her. Blessings. Stella
