Monday Musings

Popcorn
(This will blow your mind)
This is enlightening!!!

This is probably what it does to our brain cells - like putting your head in a microwave!!!!
Check this out! And we're supposed to believe that mobile phones are safe?
Click on the word 'POPCORN' below and watch.

Okay Monica looked it up on snopes and sent it to me - it's not true. Sorry. I still think cell phones are dangerous to the brain.

Happy Birthday Sam Walton - Wikipedia

Sam Walton was born to Thomas Gibson Walton and Nancy "Nannie" Lee near Kingfisher, Oklahoma on March 29, 1918. There, he lived with his parents on their farm until 1923. Sam's father decided farming did not generate enough income on which to raise a family, so he decided to go back to a previous profession of a mortgage man. So he and his family (now with another son, James born in 1921) moved from Oklahoma to Chesterfield, Missouri. There they moved from one small town to another for several years. While attending 8th grade in Shelbina, Sam became the youngest Eagle Scout in the state's history. In adult life, Walton became a recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America.[3]

With a strong Christian background based on hard work and ethics Walton excelled physically in high school, winning state titles in both basketball and football. As starting quarterback for Columbia's David H. Hickman High School, Walton never lost a game. While at Hickman, he also served as vice president of the student body in his junior year and as president in his senior year. He performed well enough academically to become an honors student.

Growing up during the Great Depression, Walton had numerous chores to help make financial ends meet for his family. He milked the family cow, bottled the surplus, and drove it to customers. Afterwards, he would deliver newspapers on a paper route. In addition, he also sold magazine subscriptions. Upon graduating, he was voted "Most Versatile Boy."

After high school, Walton decided to attend college, hoping to find a better way to help support his family. He attended the University of Missouri and majored in economics and was an ROTC officer. During this time, he worked various odd jobs, including waiting tables in exchange for meals. Also during his time in college, Walton joined the estimable Zeta Phi chapter of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He was also tapped by QEBH, the well-known secret society on campus honoring the top senior men. Upon graduating in 1940, he was voted "permanent president" of the class.

Walton later joined JC Penney's as a management trainee in Des Moines, Iowa three days after graduating from college. This position earned him $75 a month. He resigned in 1942 in anticipation of being inducted into the military for service in World War II. In the meantime, he worked at a DuPont munitions plant near Tulsa, Oklahoma. Soon afterwards, Walton joined the military in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps, supervising security at aircraft plants and prisoner of war camps. In this position he served at Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City, Utah. He eventually reached the rank of captain.

What a man! What do you think he would think of Wal Mart today if he were still alive?

Happy Monday Sandie, Thanks for sharing the inspiring story of Mr. Walton. Like most of us, I think he would be disturbed by many of the changes in our nation in general!

What a cool video - but scary - yes indeed! Can it fry a brain?

Interesting video to say the least. I would love to know if it's because of the cell phones all bouncing off of each other...oh well that's how my brain works...lol.

I am not so sure that Sam would be happy with some of the things his company does today but I do like the prices. Can't have it both ways. I had a scary thought when I just looked over the desk at my husbands head:) So much popcorn! I had a thought that you need to get a strap for your new camera to go over your head so your hands are free when you are walking around. I am always game for a little trip so check out all the places next week in case the blog gals want to do a fun getaway weekend to the beach.

I couldn't find the link that I thought I had saved debunking that video of the popcorn and cell phones. The good news is that it is a hoax. I believe they had a hot plate type of device under the table cloth to pop the kernels.

Don't you wish everyone would spend their time and creativity for something useful or at least comforting instead of giving us more to worry about? Then again with YouTube, you and I could be doing something all in fun to spoof each other and someone films it and it is all over the internet before we've washed the glasses from our little party.

Interesting read on Sam Walton. Once again, I knew some but not all of what you posted. Thanks!

hmmmm... the popcorn thing is a bit disturbing.

I think Sam Walton would be concerned about many things going on right now, too.

PS the Bible Quiz was fun! I never got back to the comment page after visiting yesterday. =)

Sandie,

I am having some issues with my pictures on the computer right now, so I can't see your video, but I have seen one like it before. I couldn't believe that it worked. Instead of Jiffy Pop we have Brain Pop. Laura

Hey Sandie!

I think that if Sam Walton was still alive he would not be selling all of that made in China junk! Sam Walton was a proud American who opened the store on the Made in America moto!

Hugs,

Hi, Sandie! It's nice to finally meet a Georgia blogger. I'm so glad you stopped by my blog.

I know Kennesaw well. My sister lives in Marietta and my brother lives in Woodstock. Those are my old stomping grounds. I live in Elberton, about 40 miles north of Athens.

Well, again, I'm so glad you stopped by. And, please do stop by Mari's blog for her grandma meme. She's just getting it off the ground, but participation day is on Tuesdays. You take good care and may God richly bless you today and every day!

Your friend in Christ from GA,
Georgia

PS ~ Thank you for your condolences in regards to the loss of my best friend. It's tough losing your best friend.

Hi, Sandie... I'm trying to leave this morning, but I wanted to drop by and visit for a second. I don't think cells are good for your head either (JMO). And popcorn is not good for your gallbladder (so says my naturopath).

Mr. Walton was amazing. I am one of those who like WalMart, but I don't like the fact that a lot of small businesses don't exist now because they couldn't compete. Nor do I blame that all on WalMart, but rather much of the blames lies on the cheap imported goods that have flooded our market. And who buys those goods? All of us. I'm as guilty as the next person. I started taking note of what is imported and am just shocked.

It's more complicated than all of that, but suffice it to say that I do shop WalMart and salute Mr. Walton. I also like the fact that WalMart supports the Salvation Army and lets them do their bell ringing campaign there, unlike Target and some other stores.

XO,

Sheila :-)

I think Sam Walton would be turning over in his grave.
And I love the Lily Tomlin saying, I am going to have to make a sign with that on it.
