Saturday - Some Public Service Information

I an just passing this information on to you. The way I view things - information is a good thing, but I don't go nuts about it. As you know I go nuts about other things - teehee. sandie

Thanks Trish.

In case you were not aware - it is a couple years old now, but when it first came out I wasn't aware of it. So I'm passing this one to you again:

"Dr. Oz had a show on the fastest growing cancer in women, thyroid cancer. It was a very interesting program and he mentioned that the increase could possibly be related to the use of dental x-rays and mammograms. He demonstrated that on the apron the dentist puts on you for your dental x-rays there is a little flap that can be lifted up and wrapped around your neck. Many dentists don't bother to use it. Also, there is something called a "thyroid guard" for use during mammograms. By coincidence, I had my yearly mammogram yesterday. I felt a little silly, but I asked about the guard and sure enough, the technician had one in a drawer. I asked why it wasn't routinely used. Answer: "I don't know. You have to ask for it." Well, if I hadn't seen the show, how would I have known to ask? We need to pass this on to our daughters, nieces, mothers and all our female friends and husbands tell your wives !! "

Now last year when I had my mammogram - I had to ask for it. The gal got a little ticked and went out to get it - they had only one in a huge practice for just mammograms! A doctor used it. She said did you hear that on Dr. Oz - I said yes and showed her my paper - she asked if she could keep it and of course I gave it too her. She said they would have to order more!

SO ASK! At the dentist and for mammograms.

Thanks Linda

For icy door steps in freezing temperatures: Get warm water and put Dawn dish washing liquid in it. Pour it all over the steps. They won't refreeze. Thanks Jeannie

Good to know! I always feel like I'm poisoning myself when I'm sitting there letting them take x-rays. You'd think they'd have to cover you up as much as possible!! Thanks for sharing!

Very interesting info--Thanks, Sandie.I've had a number of different radiological tests this past year. God only knows what side effects they might have in order to get the needed info.

Thanks for the info Sandie.

Hope that you don't have to use the water and dish washing liquid where you are. but it is worth knowing.

Hi Sandie...Have a dental appointment this MONTH and will ask them to cover the thyroid if they take x-rays. (Which they almost always require.) So thanks.

Never asked for it during a mammogram, either. Brother. Always something, isn't there?

Well, take care and have a wonderful Saturday. Will have to try that Dawn and water trick! Susan

Informative and useful information. The wax stuff is alarming. Being a nurse, I knew already about the thyroid guard. I don't understand it not being offered routinely though. Nice of you to provide this helpful info.

Interesting about the thyroid's susceptibility to damage from x-rays. I will have to remember this when I have my mammo next month. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for all this good information. I just had my mammogram and I have also had countless dental X-rays since last summer due to an infection I can't seem to get rid of. But now I know next time.

Great quote! This is awesome info Sandie! It's ridiculous that you have to ask for something like this!
Hope you're having a great weekend!

Great information today, Sandie.
My good friend is having surgery next friday to remove a cancerous thyroid and she suspects dental x-rays as the cause.

That was pretty interesting information about thyroid cancer. I just had my mammogram last week. Too bad I didn't know to ask. But then again, why should we have to ask?

As of next Wednesday, I will be a 30 yr SURVIVOR of thyroid cancer. I used to be diligent about asking for an xray shield, but have grown lax. Must start doing it again. Wish I had seen the Dr. Oz program.

Very useful information. It seems strange the thyroid guard isn't used routinely, doesn't it.

I can guarantee you that the next time my kids go to the dentist or myself we will be using that neck thing or they will not be doing x-rays of us!

What I love is when the technician puts on an apron and they don't put one on the patient.
