Saving Berries The key to preventing moldy berries...

"Berries are delicious, but they're also kind of delicate. Raspberries in particular seem like they can mold before you even get them home from the market. There's nothing more tragic than paying $4 for a pint of local raspberries, only to look in the fridge the next day and find that fuzzy mold growing on their insides. Well, we can tell you that how to keep them fresh! Here is a tip I am sharing on how to prevent them from getting there in the first place:

Wash them with vinegar.

When you get your berries home, prepare a mixture of one part vinegar (white or apple cider probably work best) and ten parts water. Dump the berries into the mixture and swirl around. Drain, rinse if you want (though the mixture is so diluted you can't taste the vinegar,) and pop in the fridge. The vinegar kills any mold spores and other bacteria that might be on the surface of the fruit, and voila! Raspberries will last a week or more, and strawberries go almost two weeks without getting moldy and soft. So go forth and stock up on those pricey little gems, knowing they'll stay fresh as long as it takes you to eat them."

Thank you Linda

Vitamin D-3 May Cut Fat Mass and Boost Heart Health Markers

March 2012
A new study says that supplementing daily with vitamin D-3 may improve certain markers of heart health like HDL cholesterol, and lead to significant reductions in body fat mass in overweight and obese people.

A daily dose of 1,000 International Units (25 mcg) was also associated with increases in LDL cholesterol.

Supplements of the "sunshine vitamin" were also associated with a significant reduction in body fat mass, compared with placebo, added researchers from the Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

While our bodies do manufacture vitamin D on exposure to sunshine, the levels in some northern countries are so weak during the winter months that the body makes no vitamin D at all, meaning that dietary supplements and fortified foods are seen by many as the best way to boost intakes of vitamin D.

If you are interested I did find it on youtube:

Vit. D3 is the issue I have been struggling with this past 8 weeks, Sandie. I've shared some of it with you. Bone levels should be 3.2 & above, I am now down to 2.3 ... not good.

TY for that berry solution ... will try this for sure.

Have a beautiful PS weekend~

Thanks for the tip for preserving berries. I know that sometimes I end up throwing half of them away because they are growing hair. Have a good day.

strawberries are in here, the strawberries festival is in full swing, so i bought a great big box of them today, wonder if this would work on strawberries. of course we eat them so fast the stuff can't grow. ha ha

I haven't heard the thing about berries and vinegar, I just heard not to wash them till you use them so they won't get moldy. Now I am calling the pharmacy to see what kind of Vitamin D the doctor is giving me, he just doubled it for the second time! The frog thing, wonder how hard it would be for American kids the same age, maybe much harder?

This winter has been a strange one in that the sun has been out a lot more than usual. I haven't had the winter blues like I got the past few years! Thank God! I needed that this year for sure!

Hi Sandie,

Great tip on the berries. I eat a lot of them.

I also take Vitamin D-3. I think it also makes you feel good. Kind of like sunshine does.

Hi Chatty -

Thanks for the tips on the berries. I always hesitate to buy them because they go bad so fast.

Thank you for the tip about the vinegar for the berries! In a few months berries will be in season, and of course we want them to last and not mold.

Very good post today, Sandie. :)
Mrs. Jim takes a super vitamin D. It could be D-3, I'll look. Now what does it do for you, help you to remember things?

I have been told that shrink-wrap is best for squirrels in the attic.

Thanks for the berry tip. That would take the sting out of those pricy fruit.
I get so much D in the warm months, I forget about winter. Late now but I will give it a shot next Winter.

I've been hearing that the younger generation is very deficient in vitamin D since they don't spend much time outside anymore. Great post Sandie. :)

I've heard about the many benefits of supplementing one's diet with Vitamin D3. "The Hub" and I have added it to our regimen.

I really liked that quote from Norman Cousins. As I recall, he was the guy who had that book about how laughter cured a very serious disease he had.

Thanks to you, dear friend, you make my life easier with the many smiles you provide!

I am so appreciative about the berry tip. I just had to throw out a box the other day that wasn't more than a day or two old. Really aggravated me. But my husband ranted more because of the cost. Thanks. Take care.
