Saturdays Servive

Remember when I told you that you could mail something without putting it in an envelope if it weighed under 13 ounces? This was about 2 inches or less in diameter - a sealed little wash cloth- with Scooby Doo on it - mailed it to Ohio just like that and it made it!

Here are some cute labels for school that Angela sent me.
Cute labels for school from Angela at West Virginia Treasures.

First For Women Magazine from Cheri at Chez Cheri

1.  IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS, UP TO 20% OF AMERICANS WILL EAT CONTAMINATED FOOD.  A cup of frozen yogurt a day containing probiotics will help - by keeping the colon healthy to fight it - it will reduce the risk 33%.  Has to have live and active cultures - like Stoneyfield, Edy's, or Dreyers.

2.  To make meat tender for grilling/cooking - brew one cup of tea and add to marinate for 30 minutes.  The teach will bread down the tannins in the meat.

3.  Sunburns - use milk.  It is cool, the fat is an emollient, and it reduces inflammation.

MUST READ, EVEN IF YOU DON'T OWN A CAR.  THIS TRUE.  WHEN YOU GO GET GAS - LOOK AT THE WARNINGS THERE.
Safety Alert!
Here are some reasons why we don't allow cell phones in operating areas, propylene oxide handling and storage area, propane, gas and diesel refueling areas.

The Shell Oil Company recently issued a warning after three incidents in which mobile phones (cell phones) ignited fumes during fueling operations

In the first case, the phone was placed on the car's trunk lid during fueling; it rang and the ensuing fire destroyed the car and the gasoline pump.

In the second, an individual suffered severe burns to their face when fumes ignited as they answered a call while refueling their car!

And in the third, an individual suffered burns to the thigh and groin as fumes ignited when the phone, which was in their pocket, rang while they were fueling their car.

You should know that: Mobile Phones can ignite fuel or fumes

Mobile phones that light up when switched on or when they ring release enough energy to provide a spark for ignition

Mobile phones should not be used in filling stations, or when fueling lawn mowers, boat, etc.

Mobile phones should not be used, or should be turned off, around other materials that generate flammable or explosive fumes or dust, (I.e., solvents, chemicals, gases, grain dust, etc...)

TO sum it up, here are the Four Rules for Safe Refueling:
1) Turn off engine
2) Don't smoke

3) Don't use your cell phone - leave it inside the vehicle or turn it off
4) Don't re-enter your vehicle during fueling
.

Bob Renkes of Petroleum Equipment Institute is working on a campaign to try and make people aware of fires as a result of 'static electricity' at gas pumps. His company has researched 150 cases of these fires.

His results were very surprising:

1) Out of 150 cases, almost all of them were women.

2) Almost all cases involved the person getting back in their vehicle while the nozzle was still pumping gas. When finished, they went back to pull the nozzle out and the fire started, as a result of static.

3) Most had on rubber-soled shoes.

4) Most men never get back in their vehicle until completely finished. This is why they are seldom involved in these types of fires.

5) Don't ever use cell phones when pumping gas

6) It is the vapors that come out of the gas that cause the fire, when connected with static charges.

7) There were 29 fires where the vehicle was re-entered and the nozzle was touched during refueling from a variety of makes and models. Some resulted in extensive damage to the vehicle, to the station, and to the customer.

8) Seventeen fires occurred before, during or immediately after the gas cap was removed and before fueling began.

Mr. Renkes stresses to NEVER get back into your vehicle while filling it with gas.
If you absolutely HAVE to get in your vehicle while the gas is pumping, make sure you get out, close the door TOUCHING THE METAL, before you ever pull the nozzle out. This way the static from your body will be discharged before you ever remove the nozzle.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY - that goes a long with mobile phones:

Wow, very important safety information today. I had heard that about cell phones catching fire at the gas pump, but not with the reasons and details you provided. Thanks. Hope you have a great weekend!

Good reminders. Have a great weekend.

Wow- those cell phone warnings are eye openeers!

Hi Sandie. Gosh, I would never think of getting back into my car whilst still re-fuelling! That was really important stuff about the mobile phones though. I know that I answered mine inside the car at the petrol station once, and I could see the girl frantically waving at me from the kiosk. I had often wondered why you couldn't use your phone - now I know, and shall be ultra-careful! Enjoy your weekend my friend.

Great safety info today. thank you!

You always have such good info. and reminders. We all need that from time to time.

Great advise today! What can really be so important that you need to text in the car?! I've been in a few incidents here just walking on the streets. People are walking and not looking where they're going because they're so busy texting or doing something with their phone. At one time there was a lady, and she was walking straight towards me, and of course she wasn't looking. When I was in front of her I stopped just to see her reaction. She was looking up eventually and said...sorry sorry...I just couldn't help but laughing to myself.
Enjoy your weekend!

When I learned the cell phone thing a while back I was like WHAT? completely freaked me out since I always talked on my phone while pumping gas! Yikes. Hugs!

Good info. I never knew getting back into the car was so dangerous.

Oh my, you gave me some mighty good advice about some things I do and didn't realize they were dangerous. I don't use my cell phone when gassing up, but I do get back in the car. I won't do that anymore.
Thanks and happy weekend!

I know about the yogurt, but I need to actually do it. We are aware of the cell phones at gas pumps and I am constantly reminding my son! I wish they would ban the use of cell phones while driving! People need to pull over and park to use a phone! Great stuff Sandie!

good information to know. how many times do we do these things without even thinking about it.

I'm always so careful when I fill up at the gas station, but let me tell you what I saw one day... A guy pulled up, left his car running, was talking on his cell phone AND smoking! I kid you not. I was so afraid, as was the guy pumping right behind me, that we didn't even fill up the tanks and just left. The guy wouldn't listen to us or the attendant yelling at him over the intercom from the safety of his "bomb" shelter. It was the craziest thing I have seen at a gas station. So although those warning seem redundant, there are people who need reminding, apparently! I thought it was common sense! Ann

Oh boy, something new to worry about. I'm still back on eat frozen yogurt with probiotics. I guess I will be adding frozen yogurt to my shopping list. Have a sweet Sunday!

Unknown said...

interesting tidbit on the milk on sun burns. must be messy to put it on the burn though

SquirrelQueen said...

I am a yogurt fan already, both refrigerated and frozen. It is also a good source of calcium.

Static electricity at gas stations can be a problem. In the winter I touch the car before reaching for the gas nozzle. This takes care of the problem.

I am fairly certain the cell phone thing is an urban legend that has gotten out of hand.

I don't like cell phones. My Hubs makes me have one so he can reach me when he needs me,,.. and I admit. They do come in handy sometimes.... BUT do we really need to drive down the street and talk to everyone? I will NOT talk on mine when I drive. It takes all my concentration just to drive.

Great post Sandie!

Sandi, Great post filled with excellent information for all of us. You know how I feel about texting and driving. My daughter still suffers the effects of the crash she was in, caused by the other driver texting. He never looked up or applied brakes. This is live changing or life extinguishing.
Thanks for sharing this life saving messages.

Good advice! Here in our area, because of volume, it is not possible to put the gas pump on and get back in the car. I guess that's a good thing in more ways than one.

Glad you posted the picture of the silly guy who was driving while texting (DWT). It is hard, even when one knows the keyboard without looking. I tried it one day to see how hard it was. VERY HARD.

Did you know that Americans eat over 10 pounds of dirt a day? How many? [6.580 sextillion tons to be exact]

Cell phones are the downfall of man! People are so addicted to their phones and would rather be looking at their phones than looking at God's beauty all around them. They also ignore the people they are with to chat with the ones they aren't with. Rude! I am so glad that I just have a pay as you go phone that I only use in emergencies. I don't text at all so you don't have to worry about me texting and driving which is now against the law in the state of West Virginia!
