An unusual Barn

Okay I am cheating.  I did not take the photo of this barn.  I have the website below.  Then again I am not really doing the Barn meme either then I would have to get my own barn.  I thought this was a beautiful barn.

I copied this from the website as well:
"Round barns in Indiana are a rarity in the 21st century. While Indiana, more specifically, Fulton County, is the round barn captial of the world, few round barns remain standing. These barns are a piece of the historical landscape of the Hoosier state. Round barns are indicative of an agragarian society at the turn of the century. The round barn is a long forgotten ingenuity of a farming society that searched for innovative ways to improve their farming techniques. Bob Hamibaugh stated, "The era of round barns was a time in our agricultural history that was brief, but important. It was the birth of modern farming," ("The Round Barns of Fulton County," By: Lisa Hurt Kozarovich). Frank Retter of Randolph County would agree. As the grandson of a round barn builder, he takes great pride in his family's contribution to this aspect of farming. The round barn that his grandfather built 100 years ago is still in the family and still in use today."

What a neat barn! We had a barn when I was a child, but it was just the regular kind, not like this cool round one. I was used to silos being round, though.

Thanks for sharing this.

Sheila

I grew up on a farm so I love everything about the country life, including barns. This one is a beauty. One of my best friends lives in Amish country in Hagerstown, Indiana. I love all the pictures she sends me through emails of the country side and the barns and wagons of her Amish neighbors. She has a huge barn that she recently turned into a heated arts and crafts studio. It is amazing. She'd love this barn.

One of the most beautiful homes I have ever been in was a former barn turned house. It wasn't a round barn. Still it was amazing.

You sure got me on this one. I have never seen a round barn. This is the first picture I've seen also.

I have seen octagon houses, but still not round. Unique, I will say that, and I can imagine some benefits.
Love from North Carolina....
Thanks for the education!!!

I've had a fascination for barns ever since I was a child visiting my grandparents farm. It's still standing and from the pictures I see of it, it's in good condition too. One of my aunts lives on the property but it is her children that do the farming. Attitude is everything and we do get a choice in what outs is going to be.

I think I would like a red barn. I think I would liketo go on a "find barns" road trip. I think maybe I will be just grateful for today and where I am! ;) Have a good one!

I've seen so many interesting barns in Indiana. A few years back, I judged 4H collections in Lake County Indiana and one youngster had gone around the state photographing barns and telling their "stories". A real winner!

Best,
Bonnie

Before I moved here I lived in east central Illinois just a few miles from Indiana so I have seen a lot of the countryside there. I have never seen a round barn like that before though, very nice!

I know I have read about these before and the reasons why they built them, but I can't for the life of me remember.

What a beautiful barn, Sandie! We have a round barn about 6 miles from our house, here in NW Wisconsin. They're not the typical Wisconsin barn, that's for sure. I wonder if the cows got dizzy.

Oh wow, I love the round barn. I enjoyed reading the history about round barns. I wonder why they don't make them like that any more.

A round barn.

Oh Wow!

Now if they made houses round.

Then Tornadoes would be less to

wreck them.

In other countries they are

making them. People are even

buying light houses same reason.

Wait a minute, there's no corners to put things in? Just kidding.

I don't think you have to HAVE a barn to do the meme, you can just shoot some in your area.

nancygrayce said...

Y'all have the best barns in your area! I love that barn.....there are a few here in Florida, but not many around where I live. I grew up in the city (small, but still the city). And farm things are foreign to me. My husband is trying to bring country life up close and personal, but I'm not so sure!

Nonnie said...

That's a pretty barn. Whoever heard of such a thing? My first thought was you wouldn't have to sweep out the corners!

I love your barn, Sandie. Thank you.
Round barns are not very prevelant but immensly interesting to visit. The next time I have an opportunity to visit on I will. It will probably be in Iowa or Nebraska.
..
BTW, check out my new comment page. All the anonymous spammers have stopped, at least for the moment. My blog didn't update so no need to hurry, just next time, like perhaps tomorrow night.

Fulton County is the next county over from us! These barns are twenty miles away from us. We see them so often, they seem like the norm to us!
