Wednesday's Hodgepodge

PLEASE JOIN JOYCE OVER AT FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE POND FOR HODGEPODGE WEDNESDAY.   Just go over there and get the questions and answer them on your blog. It's a lot of fun.

1. Share one way you think the world has changed for the better since you were a kid?

There have been medical advances.  Technology.  Keeping up with friends and finding old ones with the social media.  And the fact I am not a 'kid' anymore.

2. How 'bout one way it's changed for the worse?
When I was a child - I had to go to the library - then the card catalog - find the book thought the Dewy Decimal - check out the book - search for the answers.  It took hours.

Now at the click of a button - it is all there.  Seems something is lost there to me. The struggle - kids don't have to struggle today like we did - there is something you learn from struggling.

3. Starlight, starfish, starling, Starbucks...your favorite 'star'?

In Order:
Starlight
Starbucks
Starfish
Starling

4. Name a song that's overplayed, but you love it anyway.

White Christmas with old Bing Crosby!

5. When did you last have home made ice cream? Your latest favorite flavor?

When we go to Ohio - there is a store named Graters.  It is not really homemade - but it is made in the store I believe.  But it is THE BEST ICE CREAM IN THE WHOLE WORLD - they sell it at Kroger and Publix's now and it is about $10 for a half gallon - the best FLAVOR IN THE WORLD is BLACKBERRY CHOCOLATE CHIP - it may not sound like it will float your boat, it will.  Now am I passionate about this or what?

6. What do you think is the best way to inspire or motivate people?

Now this is my opinion - from my life - from what I've learned - with the people in my life.  I can't pay them - I can't ask them - I can't beg them - I can't get mad at them - I can't enlighten them - I can't teach them - nothing like that at all works  .
There are only two things that I can think of that works - 1). Prayer and 2). Be a living example and hopefully one day they will see and try to change because their soul convicted them to do so.  Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

7. When was the last time you were without power?

Probably about a month ago - it was when grandson had his friend over for a one night sleep over - same friend - believe it or not.  For some reason our neighborhood goes out at least once a year.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Have you ever thought about this.  I think of life as a circle.  There is the top of the circle which is when we feel in a great place - all's right with the world - and there is happiness. Then as you go to 1 and 2 o'clock things are so so and then 3 -4 - 5 - you are definitely going down. You're worrying and wondering. When you are are 6 o'clock you are down.  Kind of depressed. Then 7 and 8 you are feeling better there is a little bit of hope again.  9-10-11 and the world is looking good again.

It kind of teaches us that things aren't going to be great all the time or bad all the time.  That there are going to be good and bad changes, but there is always hope because we will never be holding still.  We will never stay totally depressed or happy.  Life is always changing.

My daughter's friend - another teacher that had gone with them - got class in her foot - the only good thing about that - the medic was cute!  In Mexico.

Grandson must have had a good time in Mexico!

THE LAUGH:

THE LIFT:

You can do that to your self too!  Turn your old boring self into a work of art by removing the negatives and replacing it with the positive colorful marbles!

I howl when my hubby medic picks anything out of my foot... he is a cute medic...starlight is my favorite to... and i agree we have forgotten how to do things the long way, i find it hard to use a phone book now, or a dictionary. i am so used to click click click to look up a word. and my friends 21 year old grandaughter cant tell time on a clock with hands on it, she can only use a digital read out. she struggles to tell what time it is on my cousins kitchen clock.

Quite a variety of things this Wednesday, Sandie. I always like those questions and see your answers.

Even though searches are easier now, I miss that old library card catalog. I miss the old libraries too. So much has changed about them. The old character and personality of the place is gone.

Karen said...

I used to work in one of the "old" libraries back in the seventies...although I enjoy and appreciate the advances we have made, I still miss some of the less modern ways for sure...

Thanks for an interesting read!

My answer to #4 would be Silver Bells. Arrgh, I cringe now when I hear it.

Love the lift! This is a great series. I get to find more about you every week, Sandy!

I am starting to look forward to your answers. I think they are original, and good. A couple are 'I wish I had said that' type answers. The stars one, I had to laugh because I did not know some of them (maybe one of them).Absolutely love the lift in both the spiritual way and physical. Cannot wait until I have another wooden fence to try it.
HUGS from Michigan!

First of all, I love that fence idea with the marbles. So awesome.

There is a Graeters about 20 minutes from my house and I have never been there. I remember once years and years ago going to one in Cincinnati. After hearing you talk about it, seems to me I need to be making a trip there soon. haha

Love the fence idea and love, love, love homemade ice cream - any flavor. When I was young, I couldnt imagine why grown-ups ate vanilla ice cream. Now I know, and I love it too! lol

Love the fence image! Great idea. And thinking back--I don't think I've ever had homemade ice cream!

Oh yes, the circle of life! Everything comes full circle. Side note here: I can't post a comment when I view your blog through my Bloglovin' feed but I can when I click on your link in the Hodgepodge linky. I have this problem with another blog too. I don't know if it's something with Bloglovin'or just my computer. Have you experienced this with any blogs through your Bloglovin' feed?

card catalog. wow...

I remember going to the library to check out a book for a school report. Book report as I recall. It was a natural thing to do. We didn't give it a though really, because it was how we'd get the book. Things are indeed far easier now.

Have a terrific day honey. Big hugs. ☺

Wow! There is so much wisdom in this entry, my friend. I agree all the way. I don't know if I'd like that ice cream or not but you sure make it sound good.

The fence idea is cool but I'd never drill holes in my fence. However, I'd use this idea to fill existing, natural holes in it!

I love your "life as a circle" metaphor. So true Sandie. So true. And I agree about something being lost regarding searching for things in libraries. I can still remember that as well during my first two years in college.

I loved the library. :)

Bing Crosby's 'White Christmas' can never be played too often. :)

Brought back fun memories of the local public library. And you're right about the struggle. I think that perseverance is something kids are not learning these days. Everything has to come fast and easy. Who's going to be working on solving the many step, many failure, long-time-in-solving problems of the world?

Elizabeth said...

I laughed because I think internet research is a real boon, but you had the opposite view. I agree about struggling, though. I feel I should have let my children struggle more - this is one thing I'd change about my parenting if I could go back.
I loved your clock analogy. I may have to steal it.

Theresa said...

Hehe, love the generation gap! I remember the card catalog too. I love that I can request books online and just pick them up at my library now :)

Sharon said...

I love your hodgepodge - and I just can't help but play along...

1. This was tough - not many of the changes have been good ones. Though I think I would agree with you - medical advances, for the most part, have been good.

2. I think technology is a bad change in many ways. I believe people have swapped instant communication with intimacy. We can "connect" more - but we seem to do it in less meaningful ways.

3. I'm like you! How about this? Sitting at the beach, looking up at the starlight, with a cup of coffee from Starbuck's, while touching a starfish, as a starling flies by. Perfect????

4. I kinda like "American Pie" - even though it goes on and on...and on.

5. Years ago. My favorite home-made? Peach. My favorite all-time? Toss-up between Rocky Road and Mint Chocolate Chip.

6. AMEN to what you said!

7. A few months ago. It was a planned outage, so we were prepared.

8. The world according to Chatty is great!

XO

LOL! I love the comic. It's ridiculous how guys wear their pants below their butt. NOBODY wants to see that. Its one of those fashion fads where you go "What are they thinking?!"

Betsy Banks Adams said...

Good Lift for today, Sandie. I always love your answers to the 'random questions'..... Guess I would say that medical research and improvements would be my answer to Question No. 1 too.... I was thinking technology--but in some ways, I think technology would be better as a No. 2.... Not sure that all of this new technology is good for us as a people....

I think that peoples' attitudes are much worse now ---especially kids. There's no respect for others anymore... Kinda sad.

I'd choose Starlight also ---and even though I love birds, I certainly don't like Starlings... ha ha ...Starbucks would be LAST on my list.

I don't know how long it has been since I had homemade ice cream. Think I may have had some at a Sunday School Party about 12-13 yrs. ago....????

A gift of caring and listening always help with dealing with people. All people love affection --and someone who cares for them...

Great post.
Hugs,
Betsy

#4 is so true, but nothing puts me in the Christmas mood better than hearing that song. Classic!

Catherine said...

Dear Sandie, The star I like would be the starfish.
I don't know if this is considered ice-cream but I make it in the food processor with frozen fruit and milk or cream.
I think by living life to the be the best example as Jesus would want you to live and instilling respect in your children.
I was without power during Sandy.
I would hope that people will turn first to Jesus with their problems
and trust in Him for guidance.

Theresa Mahoney said...

Our power goes out about 3 times a year. Just a few weeks ago it was out for almost 5 days. 5 DAYS! Can you believe that!? We've stated researching what it would take and cost of get a generator. Being without power is for the birds!

LOVE the picture of your grandson!!! Your way to motivate people I totally agree with! I had something else to say but just in a minute I have forgotten it!

The medical advancements are a wonderful blessing. Yes I agree with hearing Christmas songs over and over again. I love the marble idea on the fence, saw that on Pinterest!

GREAT post, Sandie. I always like how you answer the questions and add your own at the end. I agree about the treks to the library-there was something wonderous about that experience. Love the "generation gap". xo Diana

I would agree with you that the leaps and bounds made in the medical fields are the greatest improvement. Then technology. I had polio before the vaccine was invented. Course when the vaccine came out, I took it. I had no bad or lasting effects from polio, I was one of the lucky ones. I too like the way you described the circle of life. Hope you are having a wonderful Wednesday!

Ann said...

I like your answer to how things have changed for the worse and I totally agree with that.
Cool idea with the fence

A delightful post, thank you Sandie. Your grandson has a terrific smile. (I didn't want to say cute in case he found out somehow.)

I think I've finally passed 6 o'clock and am approaching 8:30. What a great way to think of things and what you said it's true, the depressing or difficult times always pass and good things eventually come, we just have to be patient and be observant that we see those good things. A lot of people miss them.

Technology. None of us would be reading and commenting on your blog without it. It has opened my world tremendously. Every advancement brings responsibility and society is adjusting to the responsibility of such advanced technology. The adjustment will come and in the long run, I believe it will be for the better. Unfortunately now we have to suffer through the Anthony Weiner stage. Ann

Yeah I remember going to the library and searching for different books it was wonderful, not that I am complaining about how easy it is now days it is just different and not quite the same.......some of the old ways are still cool if given a chance

Great Post! I definitely like to hold a book in my hands. I don't think I would like a kindle or the sorts. I always enjoyed visits to the library.

You are right about struggling. No one has patience any more. I hear complaints if the internet loads too slow. People don't even want to wait for a second or two. The commercial about the lighting fast internet tells me something is wrong with our patience.
I love the generation gap joke! Happy Wednesday.

I LOVE the fence idea! We will be doing it. :)

I agree that everything being so easy for todays children might not be so great.

Stacy said...

I agree with you about #2. The young ones coming up don't have to work too hard for anything. I think it's made them kind of lazy and expecting everything to be that easy.

Going to have to check out that Ice Cream. Good reading.

Debbie said...

So agree with you on both number 2 and number 6! I also love your circle or clock analogy. Spot on.

And if I had a fence (and I wish I did.) I would love the marble thing.

Totally random aside here, but did your GS have braces? He has one of the nicest sets of teeth I've ever seen on a kid that age.

Oh, number 6!!! Amen, amen and amen, Sandie!! blessings and hugs ~ tanna
