Thursdays Thoughts - Be careful not to drink to much coke!

Something to think about - 1 coke is a good thing - 20 cokes not such a good thing...

We went to the Coke-Cola Museum Sunday after church.  It was a hot summery day - blistering hot  My grandson has wanted to see it for a long time - so we thought why not.

Their parking lot was closed because it was filled so we parked in the Georgia Aquarium Parking lot just a little further.

Walked to the museum and not too bad of a wait.

We entered the wonderful world of Coke.  Now Atlanta had a big part in the Coke business and we have a tremendous amount of history in Coke-Cola too.

This is from their website The World Of Coke

"Coca-Cola history began in 1886 when the curiosity of an Atlanta pharmacist, Dr. John S. Pemberton, led him to create a distinctive tasting soft drink that could be sold at soda fountains. He created a flavored syrup, took it to his neighborhood pharmacy, where it was mixed with carbonated water and deemed "excellent" by those who sampled it. Dr. Pemberton's partner and bookkeeper, Frank M. Robinson, is credited with naming the beverage "Coca-Cola" as well as designing the trademarked, distinct script, still used today."  (He doodle it by name on a piece of scratch paper).

Did you know? The first servings of Coca-Cola were sold for 5 cents per glass. During the first year, sales averaged a modest nine servings per day in Atlanta. Today, daily servings of Coca-Cola beverages are estimated at 1.6 Billion globally.

You can go read more history - it's fascinating - however I love history and I live in Atlanta so I am not sure if I am biased.

So I will show some photos and explain a little about them.

You walk in and see about 15 huge and different bottles of cokes - maybe more.

Pemberton making his coke formula.

Grandson at the soda fountain - the only way coke could be distributed at first.  Each one was made individually.  They would put the coke in - the water - then the fizzle!

Old memorabilia.  Worth a lot of $$$ if you have any.

Batman er I mean grandson holding one of the actual Olympic Touches - a proud sponsor of the Olympics.

The bottling process today - coke is 90% water.

Now I am going to tell you the story I was told there.  This is THE VAULT.

He told us this was where the one and only copy of the coke formula lives today.  (???)

TAH DAH - THIS IS THE VAULT ITSELF!

NOW HERE IS WHERE THE LESSON COMES IN ABOUT LIMITING THE AMOUNT OF COKES YOU DRINK-

Almost every continent has it's own version of coke and some of it's own made by coke.

They have a fountain for every coke product made by country.  It also makes Vitamin Water - Power Ade - and Dasani Water.

Here are the fountains:

Europe
ASIA

South America

You can see the problems starting here.  There are these cups, all the fountains,  for free, and an 11 year old that loves coke.

Not a great shot I admit - but the cute tyke told his mom that that one tasted good - but he lied!

I didn't get the other countries I guess, but of course North American had one and they had a huge room filled with cokes beside.  Ever see that big machine that can make like a 100 different flavors.  They had 20 of them!

Okay Latin America.

The lesson - what NOT to do at the Coke Museum -

Now you ask me why - because 20 cups of coke makes you sick.
He said he was never going to drink another coke - he was so sick.
No more cokes until that night actually - they gave us all a free bottle of coke to take home! lol

Okay that was our little adventure and lesson for the day.  Enjoy a coke, but just one.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY:

OR HAVE A COKE AND CALL A FRIEND!

x_3bf587b6 Coke commissioned Norman Rockwell to paint about 8 pictures. They have found 4 - if you have one of them hanging around - they will buy if from you and you can retire!

Thanks for taking us along on this great tour of the Coke museum! Looks like so much fun...well...except for overdoing the Coke. ;) Really great info too!

Someone will turn up on Antiques Roadshow with one of those Rockwell paintings!

Interesting fact....the original recipe called for three parts coca leaves to one part cola nut..therefore...the drink contained cocaine (for real). In 1903 the recipe was changed and the fresh coca leaves were replaced by "spent" coca leaves from which the cocoaine had been extracted rendering the drink "non addictive". Hah!!

So interesting. I don't drink coke myself except on rare occasions but it is nice to know that it's not a good idea to drink 20. lol.

What a cool tour Sandie!! Years ago in Las Vegas, Coke had a place you could taste all the Cokes from around the world.

I see you put a new picture up on your Profile.... very nice. You look so young

Sally said...

How great that you were able to make the tour. I'd be with G/S and drinking too much. I remember my first coke very well; I was about four and one of my uncles bought me one in the glass bottle, and I believe it was indeed a nickel. Then all through the years when I'd visit over home, he and I would sit and have a coke. :)

What fun! And yeah, I'd get sick from that many Cokes too. :-) But what an interesting museum and post! I'll have to go look in the attic for that Norman Rockwell. I'm sure it's there somewhere. ;-)

wow that's one place i want see before i die is the coke museum. i herd of all the flavors there. i am sorry your grandson got sick o his tummy, but sounds like he had fun otherwise.

I love museums!!! I'll probably never get to visit this one. Thanks for posting. It was very interesting!!!!!

I took mom and dad there several years ago and dad spotted this art deco bowl that his parents used to have. It was some sort of commemorative bowl - they kept nuts in it. He said movers stole it when they moved from Elberton to Macon.

Yes - I chuckled at his drinking all that coke product. :) Oh my - that would mess with your insides.

I haven't been to the NEW Coke museum! Glad they still have the tasting area of all the different cokes. Guess tasting coke is like tasting wines - can only sip it and move to the next?
Growing up - we would go to the drug store and get a 10 cent cherry coke at the soda counter after church. HA - that dates me!! Loved how the fiz would pop on my nose. Still love cherry coke - but not the same as back then!

CalamityJr said...

Can your mostly fun post handle another warning about drinking too much Coke? We had a young man in our dental office this week who drinks three cans a day, and had nine - yes, nine! - cavities! Enjoy your soda, but drink it, then brush or at least rinse, and don't immediately open another, please.

I've lived in the ATL suburbs for over 10 years now and still haven't been to the Coke Museum. I only drink coke occasionally...good but dangerous stuff!

What a cool post this morning Sandie! I love coke but I don't think I could sample that many.

Tammy@Simple Southern Happiness said...

I use to keep Coke in business and wondered why for so many years I felt awful. Have not had coke in 4 years and feel so much better. Bless his heart, nothing like feeling sick with something you ate.

betty said...

That looked like a lot of fun, Sandie! If I'm ever in your area, I would have to check it out! I can see why GS would have continued to drink it seeing how it was presented that way in all those fountains and free! thanks for sharing your day with us!

I've always liked coke but rarely do I have one. I'm an iced tea drinker for the most part once I get my morning coffee out of the way. My first full time job was working at a coke plant. Right out of high school. I didn't work there long as I went on to a better job, but it was one I enjoyed. We are having some much needed rain here right now. It has delayed my departure for the campground, but we do desperately need the rain. Hope you have a great Thursday!

Interesting tour of the Coca Cola museum (I didn't even know there was such a museum). And some lessons are best learned the hard way. ;-)

I am (unfortunately) a big Coke fan...but I do limit myself. This history was very interesting to read.
BTW, I just saw on the new how much those old Olympic torches are selling for on E-Bay. Too bad GS didn't get to take the one he was holding home with him.

Looks like you all had a nice day... Years ago, I was a TAB drinker... Then I switched to Diet Coke... Then--after I met GE, we switched to Diet Mtn. Dew (a Pepsi product)... First time I had ever drunk a Pepsi product...

About a year ago, I got off of all caffeine and all carbinated drinks... SO--the drinks of my day now are Crystal Light....

Hugs,
Betsy

Love your post and photos, Sandie. Looks like a fun place! I drink Coke when Pepsi isn't available, but I prefer Pepsi. Iced tea is another favorite drink. I'm trying to learn to like unsweetened tea and wean myself off colas. It's hard!
Have a great day!

I used to drink coke every day in highschool and chips to go along with it with gravy for breakfast.
Right across the slop Joint from highschool. All the kids did. Was a food hang out. Would you believe we already had toast at home and jam. Our parents never knew.

So this was interesting to read about coke.

I should of been dead by now or had cancer.

Praise the Lord I got to be 70. he spared me with out any major problems being addictive coke drinker. Later I changed to Pepsie user.

Interesting article. I liked the article. Pictures of Grandson.

Very interesting...there used to be a Coke museum in Las Vegas and we went there some years back (it is just Coke store now, I am told) but it used to have Coke from around the world, like the museum you went to...it was fun to taste the different formulas, but some of the drinks from different parts of the world were down right nasty-tasting! Thanks for this fun post. Enjoy your Thursday!

Now that is a neat trip Sandie! I know my kids would enjoy that. We aren't Coke drinkers though but my husband's boss will only drink Coke. My husband will only drink diet caffeine free Coke.

Looks like a fun place to visit.
I have a few coke collectibles.
My family loves Coke items. I stopped drinking soda about 15 years ago. Sorry GS didn't feel well. That's a lot of coke in a short time.

Nonnie said...

That's a lotta Coke there. Having recently overdone it myself with tomatoes, I sympathize with Batman and so sorry he overdid it.

Very interesting. I am a coke fan my self. I can see why he tasted them all. Too bad he was feeling ill.

Coke is in Atlanta? I didn't know that. Was that on your USA States quiz? lol. I used to love those Norman Rockwell paintings esp. the one with Santa Claus!!!

prettty interesting!! My one kid did a science project to see if kids could tell the difference between coke and pepsi.. but I forget what the results were!!

I do hope he is feeling better now. The Mexican Coke is sold here and very popular because it is made with cane sugar. Sweeter, I guess.

It is a cool place to visit, but I think I like the old one better!

We went there many years ago and I think my kids had the same experience. What I remember most was all the different types of coke from all around the world. Thanks for refreshing my memory of that place! Ann

The idea of drinking one small cup of soda makes me sick, the thought of 20? You don't want to know.

Oh man, there's not too many things on earth that I truly hate-but I have to say that soda (especially coke/pepsi) are pretty high on the list. I never drink the stuff. Never liked it and the more I learn about what is actually in it-makes me dislike it even more.

Unknown said...

Very interesting! Sorry to hear about the GS getting sick though.

I'm drinking a Diet Coke as I type this. It's always been my favorite. That "other" cola is too sweet.

Great pictures. What a tour.

Furry Bottoms said...

I've heard about that Coca Cola place before. Seriously, Coke is 90% water?! Then the small 10% is what is filled with all the sugar and caffeine and stuff? that really strange! But I feel less guilty drinking Coke now.

Susan said...

Hi Sandie...Thanks for the tour. Sorry to tell you, but whenever I have a soda, (rarely), it's a Pepsi! hee hee Take care. Cool tour, though. Susan

Interesting for sure. But I'm not a Coke person. Hated it as a child and still do. Sorry to hear about your grandson getting sick. There is a lesson learned in having too much of a good thing.

Ann said...

I don't drink 20 cokes in a day but I still drink more than I should. My favorite is the diet coke with lime. LOVE that stuff.

Debbie said...

What a fun day! I have been to the Coca Cola Museum several times, each time with a group of kids so I know fully well about drinking too much Coke. We even took a group of German exchange students there. So. Much. Fun.

And I'll jusssst bet I know the name of the drink that GS told his mom was good. Was it 'the Beverly"

You have a mighty good looking grandson and husband...!

David was V.Pres at Coca Cola in San Antonio for 25 years, needless to say Coca-Cola is close to my heart. We met one another at Coke.... He was my boss.

I loved this post!

Arkansas Patti said...

Not sure I could do 20 glasses of water. Glad the GS is feeling better. I am lucky if I have 4 Cokes a year any more. When younger, different story.

Sounds like an interesting place for a family day out.

I use to drink lots of Coke-a-Cola, well that was until I saw a Naturopath. He told me I have the worst eyes he's ever seen. You see my eye colour is blue, but because of drinking large volumes of Coke-a-Cola he said that my eyes have very little colour. Remedy: Give up Coke, and all soft drinks. Which I did, and I can tell you I never felt better.

Interesting even though I'm not a coke person. Dare I say Dr. Pepper? However John's daughter goes around with a coke in her hand all time. I think she drinks it for water. John's nephew's wife has her entire kitchen decorated in Coke and it is very pretty.

We aren't soda drinkers, but what a neat tour! Thanks for taking us along!

How fun Sandie and what a typical kid your grandson is, we can all probably remember one time when we ate or drank way too much of something, for me it was chocolate chips, I didn't eat them for years afterwards! Sounds like you had a very interesting day!

Sandie, I toured the Coke museum many years ago and it was fun, but I'm sure there is much more to see today. It must have been a "cool" place to go as relief from all that heat, which thankfully has lessened in these parts after severe thunderstorms hit.

Knitty said...

I've switched from too many diet Cokes (bottled) per day to an occasional diet Coke from McDonald's ( large drinks are still $1) and am still undecided if the stuff is addictive or just a strong habit.

I would like to see the museum though and would probably sip from many of the other countries.

This was a very interesting post. I've been to museum but it was years ago. When we have traveled abroad, I'm always surprised at flavors countries have that we don't have. I still remember an orange Coke in France a few years back.
