AN INTERESTING STORY - A RARE HISTORICAL PHOTO

 I learned something at my bible study that I thought was interesting and wanted to share it with you.

The study is called 'The Gospel on the Gound' - by Kristi McLellan a Bible professor at a college in Mississippi.

The book is about how, after Jesus died - just how did the gospel spread then??

This part of it really didn't have much to do with how the gospel spread, but I found it incredibly interesting about how God takes care of us and things work out in the end - even after horrific circumstances.  

This is a story from the early 1930's from Kell, Germany whose population was 500 at the time.  

They think that the wife of Rabbi Posner took this photograph.  She was taking a photo of the Menorah during the holidays and the Nazi symbol just happened to be in the background because their headquarters were there. She didn't realize it at the time.

 Ironic - the photo caught both?

Once she saw what she had captured in the photo she wrote on the back of it . . . 

"Our Light will outlast their flag."  and it did thank God.

"It was the eighth night of Chanukah in Kiel, Germany, a small town with a Jewish population of 500. That year, 1931, the last night Chanukah fell on Friday evening, and Rabbi Akiva Boruch Posner, spiritual leader of the town was hurrying to light the Menorah before the Shabbat set in.

Directly across the Posner’s home stood the Nazi headquarters in Kiel, displaying the dreaded Nazi Party flag in the cold December night.

With the eight lights of the Menorah glowing brightly in her window, Rabbi Posner’s wife, Rachel, snapped a photo of the Menorah and captured the Nazi building and flag in the background.

She wrote a few lines in German on the back of the photo. “Chanukah 5692, (1932), “Death to Judah”, So the flag says, “Judah will live forever”, So the light answers."

I think that was so amazing - that in their darkest hour - and maybe hope seemed

so far away - that God was still there. 

They begged Rabbi Posner to leave the city for his safety and he did.  Almost all the 500 people left and most of the population of Jewish people including the Posner's survived.
