JANUARY 13 SOME INTERESTING GEORGIA HISTORY - THE LOWE'S GRAND THEATER - GONE WITH THE WIND - MARGARET MITCHELL - PEACHTREE STREET

(Doesn't she have dainty sweet hands?)

LOL

SOME GEORGIA HISTORY   - THE LOWE'S GRAND THEATER - GONE WITH THE WIND - MARGARET MITCHELL - PEACHTREE STREET

Margaret Mitchell and Gone With the Wind
(7) Facebook

If you click on the word Facebook above - it will bring you to a Facebook page - then click on that and it will show you all kinds of beautiful scenes from "Gone With the Wind".

It was a great movie - HAVE YOU SEEN IT?

Gone With the Wind was written by a Georgia woman, named Margaret Mitchell. Her house still stands as a Memorial to her.

Being from GA I thought that everyone knew about the book or had least seen the excellent, but LONG movie.

Since then, I have found some people that have not watched it and know nothing about it!!!!

Margaret Mitchell was killed crossing her beloved and famous Peachtree Street with her husband when she was 48 years old.  Hit by a drunk driver.

It was the only book she ever wrote and was given the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937.

Lowe's Theater

The movie was first played here at The Lowe's Theater here in downtown Atlanta.  There was a massive fire in 1978 leading to its demolition.

Gone With the Wind - when taking in inflation - makes it one of the top grossing films of all time.

While the book is fiction - there was not one false fact regarding the Civil War in it.

Vivian Leigh - Scarlett

Fourteen thousand women auditioned for the roll!!  The movie actually started in production before Vivial Leigh was picked to do the roll.

She died at 53 from chronic tuberculous and bi-polar.

She had a problem kissing Clark Gable because of the odor - of his false teeth and smoking.

Clark Gable - Rhett

Ended the movie with the famous iconic words that still ring today, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a dam."
Which I think was one of the first swear words allowed in a movie.

Died at 59 in 1960 from a heart attack.

He had dyslexia.

Peachtree Street

There is one main Peachtree Street in Atlanta with at least 71 other streets with the word Peachtree in it.  There are many places with the word Peachtree in it as well.

Atlanta grew up from a site of the Creek Indians - and they had a site called Standing Peachtree - which is where Peachtree was picked up from.

So, no grid patterns here - there are no real 'blocks'.  The roads snake around and changes names making it an interesting place to drive.

No real reason for writing about this except that I thought it was interesting!

Hope Y'all did too!

Thank you for this. Brings back memories of watching the film on TV. It was a bit too long, but good viewing.
God bless.

I loved the movie! This was interesting info. I'd heard that part about "not wanting to kiss Clark Gable because of the odor, etc." Yuck! Kind of takes away from the romance of the moment...LOL. Sad that so many died so young, especially about Margaret Mitchell. I didn't know that about her! It sure was quite the epic story/film! I remember my mother didn't let my sister go see it at the theater because of the curse word and overall story she didn't think was appropriate for a young teenager back in the day! LOL. It's too bad most kids see much worse than that on TV every day nowadays!
Oh, and yes, those sweet baby hands are just precious. Enjoy!!!!!

Those little hands are the sweetest!
I've never seen the movie, but I did read the book.

Sandie - I have read "Gone with the Wind" at least twice and watched the movie countless times. I knew about Margaret Mitchell being killed and also that she only ever wrote this one novel. What a special book - certainly a favorite one of mine. I did not know that there were 14000 women who applied for Scarlett...Vivien Leigh must have been extraordinary to stand out for the part. Did not know she was bi-polar and interesting that she had trouble kissing Clark Gable. Who by the way was born and raised only about 20 miles away from where I live in the "big" town of Cadiz, Ohio (LOL). Thanks for sharing your knowledge about this famous book and movie. Hope you are having a delightful day. Hugs!

Now, YES we have seen 'Gone with the Wind'. WE loved it and it's history. I do remember Peach Tree street. We used to drive thru Atlanta to and from Biloxi Mississippi, before the interstates and beltway!
Since my history is Georgia, and I still have kin there, I seem to always have "GEORGIA ON MY MIND!"
LOVE YOU LADY! Now try to be good up there...

I read the book and later saw the movie and it was good! Those tiny hands won't stay that way long. Make me remember all the tiny hands of my children. They grow up way too soon. Good subject today and thanks for all the info. History is a favorites subject of mine.

I love the hands and feet of babies and toddlers. They grow so fast.
I've seen GWTW so many times I couldn't guess how many. Read the book, once. It was required reading in my house, because my mom was a movie buff, and she loved this movie and Clark Gable although I don't believe she knew about his halitosis. Yuck.
